Chances for MIT

I am a male asian.
My GPA is about 3.5, because I do not excel in English. Math and Science courses are more of my strong suit.

Current Schedule;
H English
Chemistry
AP Stats
APUSH
Calc III(1st semester)/Diff Eqs and linear algebra(2nd semester)

Senior year Schedule:
H English
AP Physics BC
AP Gov.
AP Environmental Science
Real Analysis and Discrete Math

My EC's include:
3 years(planning to do it senior year as well) of track and field
Plenty of volunteer work
Science Bowl
Academic Decathlon

What would my chances for MIT be providing I can finished these classes with decent grades.
I want to major in applied mathematics hopefully at MIT.

Hello! Do you have test scores?

Honestly its ok but nothing, as ive heard from this site a lot, “standoutish.” You are co peting with reall smart asians and students in general so you might want to boost up your gpa and get some leadership positions ( as well as having a good test score)

Oh yea I completely forgot to put the test scores my bad.

I have not taken the ACT yet but for SAT got a 2350 with a 800 in Math and Writing but 750 on Critical Reading.

Many people who apply to MIT will have similar scores.

High reach.

Also, there are many non native speakers who have at least 3.9 GPA so I don’t think 'not being good at English" will be considered…how long have you been here?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1690752-chance-me.html#latest</a></p>

With all top schools (not just the ivies) it’s important to consider that there are top notch kids that don’t get in, but there are plenty of accounts of non perfectionists getting in as well. I would focus on your test scores and math grades

That 3.5 could hurt you. Do you have any major awards(USAMO etc) that could possibly offset this?

@paul2752‌ I have been here for approximately 3-4 years for high school. I could also transfer to MIT for a major after going to a UC which is another possibility for me…

@KingOfTheFlies‌ I have been selected to be a Math Olympiad for Indonesia as I am not an American citizen yet. Would that offset the GPA problem?

@MathHopeful‌ ehhhh. Indonesia isn’t exactly competitive when it comes to IMO. For bigger countries like China and the US, who regularly do extremely well at IMO, being a national qualifier is a big deal.

MIT gets thousands of applications just like yours every year, many with higher GPAs and ECs. What you need is something that makes you stand out from all the others. It’s not about your classes or clubs that you are in, but about what you as an individual has developed a passion for, and what you have done with your intellectual drive and energy to create something that sets you apart.

can you pay uc schools? they are like 65k…unless you have h 2 visa.
Also, there are many int students who stay in thr us for 4+years for high school and many of them have fluent English…not excelling in English shouldnt necessarily a problem to why one does not have stellar ecs or gpa

I would work on getting some leadership positions and improving your EC’s. You need to set yourself apart, so concentrate on essays because that’s where you can show it. Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1690665-chance-me-for-stanford-african-american.html#latest</a></p>

I need to be clear on what I said:

International students who lived in CA for significant time period AND have certain types of visa is able to apply for

Affidavit of Residence, and get in school with instate tuition. For example, int kids whose parents are on working Visa may be able to apply for it.

Thank you everyone for the input. I will take it into consideration in this following year! :)
