Thanks!

Probaby not, scores too low, modest rank, no special ECs.

Finalist, like in top 20 or top 50?

top 20 finalist

he also does Science Olympiad and believe he will have higher SAT/ACT scores soon

Well, tell your “friend” that if it were me, I would further explain that, because that means that he’s one of the top young chemist’s in the whole country (though, MIT would probably know what it was anyways because some of those guys are going to MIT ((read their profiles))), but go in depth in explaining it. It shows a lot of talent to be in the top 20.

Qualifying for the Chemistry Olympiad summer camp will help, but his application seems mediocre otherwise.

Maybe those r ur projected scores on SAT.

@ Silverturtle:

I would say it would more than help. I think the person should focus a lot of his application on the Chem Olympiad finalist (but that’s just me). It takes A LOT to be a chem finalist. I’m sure you would agree with me on that:

200 or so perfect SAT scores, 300-500 perfect ACT scores, 20 chem finalists. Period.

Now, I’m sure there are deviances and what not, but it doesn’t rob too much from the merit of being a chem finalist.

I agree that it would help significantly.

While the general idea is correct, we can’t directly compare these numbers: almost every top student in the country attempts to score well on the SAT or ACT, whereas many top students have never even heard of USNCO, let alone tried to succeed at it.

True true, around 1000 people take the National exam, and while placing in the top 20 only means in the top 2% (like a 31 ACT or 2000 or so SAT), it’s the top 2% of the brightest of the brightest.

The SAT and ACT account for just about every student in the nation, including those that pull off 1200s (out of 2400) on the SAT or 12s on the ACT.

All in all, I believe that’s a significant accomplishment and should (I’m 90% sure, but I’m not an MIT expert) be the OP’s ticket in.

WHAT is USNCO ? LOL

^ There you go. :)

Anyhow, it’s the United Stated National Chemistry Olympiad. [Chemistry Olympiad Competition for High School Students](<a href=“American Chemical Society”>American Chemical Society)
