Chances for Music Industry?

Hi everyone,
Drexel is one of my favorite schools on my list, and I'm very interested in the Music Industry program. I was wondering if there are any current students/alumni/parents out there that could give me a good read on where I'd stand compared to other applicants. I know this program is super competitive, so I want to make sure I put my best foot forward!

About Me:
-white female, only child
-live in a small rural town in central New Jersey
-first in my family to go away to college (mom got a bachelor's from community college, dad went straight into police academy)

Academics:
-GPA: 3.46 UW, 3.71 W (3.3 freshman year, 3.4 sophomore year, 3.6 junior year, currently have all A's first marking period of senior year)
-SAT: 2050 (690 CR, 670 M, 690 W)
-Honors courses: English 1, History 1, Biology, English 2, Latin 4
-APs: US History (4), European History (3), English Language (4), currently taking Physics 1, English Literature, and US Government/Politics
-My school is huge (about 3200 students) and has multiple academic rigors and levels available, so our district chooses not to report rank
-Awards/Honors: Inducted in Latin Honors Society junior year, AP Scholar

Extracurriculars:
-Editor in Chief of school yearbook staff: rebuilt the club from scratch after two highly unsuccessful years- currently running one of the largest staffs in school history (50 staff members), in charge of marketing campaign (create video ads for daily morning announcements, draft and send out mailers and Listservs to parents and students, hang up signs/banners provided by yearbook manufacturer in high-traffic spots on campus). Was Section Editor of Fine Arts section and Academics section during my sophomore and junior year, respectively.
-Captain of marching band drumline: member of band since freshman year, was a featured drum set soloist junior year
-Street Teamer for Fueled by Ramen Records: works directly with FBR head of promotions/marketing to promote FBR artists by requesting their songs at radio stations, hanging up posters and ads, handing out freebies to people in line before concerts, & volunteering at shows.
-Run a music blog where I post reviews of mostly concerts and albums, as well as music-related pieces I've written for some of my school's publications.
-A few other audition-only performing ensembles (bassist in jazz band; percussionist in pit orchestra, winter drumline, and advanced concert band)

I'm doing the optional portfolio and I plan on sending in a slideshow about my work on the street team, and also a few of the best articles I've written from my blog.

Thank you!

Hi -
I’d like to know the same thing, as my son has applied EA1 this year for the program! We visited last April and they said it was the most competitive program at Drexel, with over 1,000 applicants for about 56 slots.

His stats are as follows:
GPA: 3.78UW/4.09W
SAT: 720 CR/680M/680W
APs: Art History (4), US History (5), Literature (4), taking 3 others this year
We are from CA, from a very strong academic high school of 2,700 students (ranked in top 350 in US)
Schools does not provide class rank

ECs:
JV Soccer, JV Lacrosse, Varsity Lacrosse, Leadership Class (part of team that runs all of the sound and video for school events), started his own DJ company, has been member of several rock bands, records and produces his own music, volunteers as teacher assistant at Sunday School

He sent in some of his work via the art supplement, but he has done a lot more since this application for other schools, so what he submitted is not as strong. We are crossing our fingers, should hear by next week.

I would have to assume if you are in the top 25% of their stated admission statistics and you have some music props (which you seem to have), you’ve got to have a good chance, but who knows??? Good luck!!

@Cameron121‌ Thanks! Yeah, your son and I have the same problem with the art supplement…After I finished the portfolio for my regular decision school (NYU) I realized how weak the one I submitted for Drexel was! However, I did my department tour over the summer and they said they tend to focus on the applicants who send in a portfolio rather than nothing, so I’m hoping the fact that I sent in something counts for me!

Not only did my son have stronger supplement materials a month later, but he forgot to put 2 key ECs on the Drexel and NEU apps, which comprise a huge amt of his time! So these should be really interesting decisions…

Well, crossing fingers for you and my son!! Where else have you applied for this? My S applied to USC, UMiami, Syracuse (Bandier), Northeastern (you replied to my post there too) and American (they sort of have something similar). Good luck!

In addition to Drexel and NU, I applied to NYU, Eugene Lang College, Pace (Arts and Entertainment Management), and University of New Haven. I wanted to apply to Syracuse/Bandier so badly, but the school was a bit too far away for me to be able to attend. Best of luck to your son too!

Current MIP student here, from the looks of it, it looks like your chances are really great. What they don’t tell people, and it what it seems like, is that they choose a good amount of students based on how passionate they seem about the industry, for example students who have released albums, worked with people, have a band, are independent artists doing not so bad, who have a decent fan base, who have already had a jump start in the industry. On the other end, it seems they choose people that are also passionate but have not been able to do much in the industry. A good example would be that I know a kid who has released 3 albums, and is great at making music, and I also know someone who hasn’t had much experience, but they know what they want to do and have an idea on how they want to do it.

@Lnx1996‌ Thanks for your input! I’m applying for the business concentration, but I’m kind of in between with my experience. I’ve done some small promotional work for a few labels, and I’m running a marketing campaign for my yearbook, but outside of that I don’t have much. I sent in the portfolio including a resume with all my business/performing experience and a presentation showing some of the promotional work I’ve done. I think I’m ok for Drexel academic wise, I just hope I showed enough to be considered for MI!
