Essays: All right, I suppose. Wrote about the experience of hosting and tutoring a Chinese foreign student.

Recs--Counselor and Teachers: never saw them
Additional Rec: from violin teacher at Rice who says D is her best student! never saw rec, though.
Interviews: Northwestern and WUSTL's were at some prep high school. D liked the Northwestern guy better than the WUSTL guy, who was somewhat antisocial. Brandeis went pretty well, D said. Did not interview for Vanderbilt and Syracuse.

Location: Houston, Texas
School Type: Public, sends many grads to top schools, I suppose.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female

Hooks: none that D knows of

Scholarships/interest:

Applied for Mylonas Scholarship at WUSTL, visited, took interview
Applied for Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship at Vanderbilt
Took interview w/ Brandeis alum

Please help us! We're really worried!

bump…

Sorry, how could I forget:

Prospective Major: Classics

and applying for Financial Aid!

D also submitted CD of her playing the violin–Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and Bach Partita No. 2, as well as a resum

omg she could get into all of them, with thsoe grades and ecs!!

she is very lucky as I have had teachers who REFUSE to give students a 98, 99 or 100 because they believe no one is near perfect.

(I have a friend who has at least an 100 average in physics, probably over 100, since there are bonus questions on tests that you could score big points on and yet she got a 97 in the class, along with like 3 other geniuses)

wow, and they think that their tests determine perfection? that’s dumb.

and yes, i think that your daughter can get into every school you listed!! (and perhaps better ones, if she wanted to apply)

she’s already been accepted into UT Austin (the big in-state safety) w/ $4000/yr merit money (only on NSF, though–UT’s stingy with money), Tulane w/ $24,000/yr (biggest scholarship that comes from application for admission–applied for the full-tuition, but hasn’t heard back yet!) just based on her EA application, and Case Western Reserve University w/ $27,500/yr just based on her application (hopefully will get the full tuition scholarship that is awarded on April 15th). Tulane and Case both called D and told her what a standout applicant she was.

I’d say she is in everywhere. Man, your daughter sounds like a busy bee. :)

If it wasn’t too late, I’d say she needed to add more reaches.

In at all of them, in my opinion.

Why would you retake a 4 in AP English? The AP World 3 I might understand, since some schools only grant credit for 4 and up, but the English retake seems like a waste of three hours and $80, in my opinion.

bump…

AMAZING… My opinion may not be as important seeing tat I am a senior applicant as well, but I believe that your daughter has amazing chances. Where does she find the time to do all of that?

Not to puff you up too much, but I’d say your daughter will be accepted at all five schools.

I do not understand - why is NW the only noteworthy school listed there? The standardized test scores, gpa and extracurriculars (reminds me of my mother 4 years ago putting together 3 pages of every little thing I did…shudder) equate to a top tier student. I strongly believe she’d easily be accepted to many of the top 15 schools (the top 5 are always crapshoots).

I have friends at Syra, Brandeis and Vandy - unless she gets plenty of $, pass. Though I am surprised Vandy is ranked highly at USNews. UT-Austin is a solid place - if she’s doing business, have her apply to the business honors program (BHP).

Definitely: Cal - Berk, UMich, NW, WashU, UVA, Duke, UChicago, Cornell…no Rice from H-town?
Good chance: MIT, UPenn, Princeton

If she has an idea of what she wants to do (career), then it’s possible to narrow down the best choices.

Rice is extremely difficult to get into from Houston because there are so many applicants. D knows someone who had 2400 SAT, top 5%, instrument 11 years, swimming who got flat-out rejected. Rice wants ECs to show dedication to prospective major, which D does not have. Rice could not care less is she played violin for 13 years unless she was applying to the Shepherd School.
Since D is not going to major in music, that pretty much leaves Rice out.

^lol wow, many people on CC should take your D’s example and cut down on the number of schools they’re applying to (me included). However, If you think that a school could be one that your D wants to go to, give it a shot! you never know (in the case of your D she would probably get in)

bump…

O.K., I’m sorry but this can’t be right…I’m counting OVER 200 a week EXCLUDING classes and studying (not to mention eating and sleeping)…
There are fewer hours than that in an entire week!!!
