Chances for my friend to get excepted to MIT early action

He's a rising senior at one of the top level public school and he really wants to get in to MIT. So he is planning to go early action

GPA: 3.629 (that sucks for him, He said that the teachers he got stuck with either didn't teach everyone in the class anything, so the highest grade was a B+ in his class, or his teacher ********ed grades and gave everyone a B.)

SAT: 800 Math 670 CR 680 WR
SAT II: 800 Math IIC 680 Chem 800 Japanese

AP, Honors: He took all the AP and Honors given by the school up to this year even though he only took 2 APs and 3 honors. Not sure about his AP scores though

EC's: Aikido BlackBelt (Teachers assistant, and sometimes teach as a substitute) (4-12)
Violin concert master at a regional orchestra group (2 years)
2 violin awards in highschool (10 and 11)
2 violin awards at a regional contest (10 and 11)
2 violin awards in the regional orchestra group (10 and 11)
100+ hours at food life line (9-11)
100+ hours as an intern at a biochem company (11)
varsity tennis (9-12)
Varsity Chess club member (11)
NHS member (10-11)

Maybe. He doesn't seem to stand out. Just some violin stuff and a blackbelt. His science score is too low for MIT's calibur, and his writing and critical reading scores aren't top notch either.

any other opinions? my friend is expecting 10 opinions...

Well, there isn't much he can do about the GPA, except pull it up in the beginning of senior year. He should shoot for 700+ in both reading and writing and 750+ in chem. I bet 750+ on the SAT II physics would look better than the 800 in Japanese. Don't hold me to it. Just my two cents! :)

With his current scores he have very little chance of being admit early decision into MIT. The GPA is too low and his SAT score put him at the lower 25% percentile of MIT students. The Salutorian of my class earn a 3.9 GPA with alot of AP courses, scoring near perfect in all his SAT 2 (physic, chem, math2) also receiving a median score for an MIT acceptee and receive a glowing recommendation from is interviewer and yet he didnt survive the ED. Your friend's extracurricular activities are impressive, but I dont know if they are good enough.

Between GPA and lack of math/science ECs, I'd say his chance is not great. If math/science teachers write that he is brilliant and the best in their career, he has a chance.

there's something about 6** scores that makes them look horrible. A 700 would look much better, and anything 750+ would be great. tell him to retake his SATs.

When teachers write recommendations, can't they exaggerate? My chem teacher from 10th grade loves me and she might write something along those lines, but seriously, can't she write that for anyone?
