Thanks for feedback!

Mom, your son is outgoing and bright. I'm a senior and I graduate in a few days, but I got into Columbia U. (and nearly every other school in the Ivy League), Emory, U. Chicago, Georgia Tech, etc, but I got a 32 on the ACT before applying, attend a very rich public high school in a wealthy suburban Atlanta community, and was involved in soccer, baseball, tennis for a year, football, band, etc, and some other clubs. Here's the thing though, I'm black. So, even though I think your son SHOULD be able to get into any one of those schools, I don't know whether him not being black will hurt his chances. But, tell him to keep up the great work, because he's very intelligent and very outgoing just like me. Peace!

P.S. - My stats are considered HIGHLY prestigious for a black male, so I even received a full scholarship worth over $32 k/per year from Columbia for 4 years. I got partial scholarships from Emory, U. Chicago, and other Ivy League schools, and a full scholarship from Georgia Tech.

Ummmm, Columbia doesn't give scholarships, just need based aid. That goees for all ivies.

i would say match/safety for all of those schools except Columbia, UofChicago and Brown. Those three schools are probably match/reach.

suze, yes they do. That's all I'm going to say.

I agree with jakem333--your son has a well-balanced list of colleges and some good chances at all those on the list.

Looks like a nice balanced list to me. My D's current list looks very similar, with a couple of reach schools, a few mid-range and some rolling admissions safeties. Will he apply EA to UofC? Best of luck! P.S. you might want to post this on the Parents Forum as there are many knowledgable folks there that don't frequent the "Chances" forum.

You should assume the chances of admission at Columbia and Brown are under 20%, Northwestern and UChicago under 40%, and the others probably greater than 60%. If any of those public universities is in-state then for that one you can raise it up to 80% or safety level.

Those odds on Columbia and Brown are not really low but simply reflect a reality that few have more than a 20% chance and the pool of students who apply will mostly have credentials that look similar to your son's. The same applies to Northwestern and UChicago but at the better percentage and UChicago has a twist because it considers essays and EC's to be "very important" and substantially more important than test scores.

Thanks a lot for replying.

I will post this in the parents forum too.

Just curious. Are you Asian?

Columbia--reach
Brown--reach
University of Chicago--reach
Michigan Ann Arbor--match
Case Western--safe match

OK darkknight, just don't tell anyone else or Columbia will get kicked out of the ivy league.
