What are my chances for NCSU, App state, and UNCW? My school is fairly competitive and typically sends a good amount of students to these colleges. I’m aware my GPA is fairly low for NCSU standards.

@HSstudentNC My daughter finished HS in 2013 and toured just 3 schools. Guess which? NCSU, App State, UNC-W. She thought App was too far away (though she’s been snowboarding since and loves Boone). So she applied to just 2 schools, both early admission. I remember NCSU’s cut-off was Oct 15 and we were notified by Dec 15. She got into both and chose NCSU, her dream school, into the Animal Science Program.

Her HS also sent more than a few to NCSU. Her SAT superscored (all from her last sitting Oct of her Senior year) was 1800, or 1250 (630 math, 620 verbal). She had a 24 on the ACT, the same one everybody in North Carolina took. On her 4 APs she got 4, 3, 2, 1. Class rank was 52 out of about 350. Weighted GPA was 4.14.

So you seem very competitive for all 3, including NCSU. We attended the info session there. They told the big audience that admissions really does not read letters of rec or consider ECs. It’s all about the SAT, GPA, class rank. They understand the weighted GP thing.

Definitely retake the SAT and consider tutoring. My D2013 had an 1170 on the first SAT she took her junior year. We sent her to Sylvan and believe that formal tutoring helped her raise her score to 1250, which was in the middle of the NCSU SAT range. One thing to keep in mind is the new SAT scores, which you took, have been running 50 to 70 points more than the old. Instead of tutoring here is always buying the SAT guide and studying on your own.

I’d recommend applying to all 3. Apply Early Action, as it does not obligate you. Also, consider ECU, UNC-C and maybe UNC-G as safeties. You can wait till Jan 1 to apply to them. One of D’s friends did not get into NCSU, went to UNCC, made A’s, and transferred after sophomore year to NCSU. He just graduated from NCSU and went into the Peace Corps. Because NCSU is so large and has some attrition they take in a good number of transfers if you happen not to get in first try. Also, remember that NCSU stats are somewhat jacked up because of the higher stats needed for Engineering and School of Design.

Being male is almost always an advantage, except at tech schools like NCSU. UNC-W is 60% female, UNCG 65%, and UNCC about even. Good luck!

Thank you so much. I will certainly take your advice as far as applying to some safeties goes and SAT tutoring. I am nearly finished with my EA application for NCSU and hopefully the fact that I’m not applying to the College of Design/Engineering will help my chances.

@HSstudentNC Well, I’ve been trolling around on CC for a year and was lucky enough to come cross your post. I was assuming that NCSU was your first choice. It has the most national recognition, altho App State and UNCW SAT ranges are nearly the same, last time I looked. I cannot remember which specific college of NCSU that Biology falls under. Anyhow, consider the transfer option if you need to. For transfers, the SAT is less important than the GPA for the first 2 years of college.
