Reflection:
Strengths:My standardized test scores as well as being founder of a club. I also think I wrote a unique essay plus teacher recommendations are good. I also took a tour of NYU and have family that goes there. I'm also going to Early Decision there.
Weaknesses:My gpa is low due to the workload that I pushed myself to take(doubling up sciences sophomore year and taking Ap Government at the same time along with precalculus). I kind of stretched myself to the point that I couldn't handle it and ended up getting mediocre grades in every class.

High match/low reach I think.

Btw, what makes you want to be a dentist? I was always curious why dentists want to be dentists.

Plagarism! And you didnt even cite me. How dareth you!!!

Thanks for the opinion! I’ve always wanted to be a dentist. My dentist is a family friend so I’ve never really felt intimidated at being at the dentist and I also have good oral health. Thats kind of where it started.

NYU Pre-dental ED: Reach (I believe they have hundreds of apps for 10 slots)

@Catria would you say a complete reach or something thats still a considerable maybe? Also do you have any information on the number of apps that NYU pre dental gets?

Why do you want to go to NYU for dental school? Estimated cost is $100,000 a year. That’s $400,000 for 4 years, on top of the $250,000 you will pay for your bachelor’s. Is your family paying $650,000 so you can go to school and become a dentist?

This isn’t a financial question, its an admission chance question. Also, where did you get $100,000 per year? its around $58,000 per year including room and board.

$58k is for undergrad. If you somehow got into NYU pre-dental then it’s three years at $58k for undergrad, not four. And dental school is $80k, room and board included. You’re still looking at $500k for your education.

But would you be willing to attend NYU regular if you couldn’t get into pre-dental? I think Rutgers dental is a better idea, financially.

NYU regular: High match

It should be a financial question. Do your parents know that you applying ED will force them to write a $500k check? Albeit not in one payment, but still…

Here’s the cost from NYU’s website. [New York University College of Dentistry](<a href=“NYU College of Dentistry”>NYU College of Dentistry) Dental school tuition is $62k. Room and board is $28k. Books and instruments are $7500. That’s nearly $100k. You won’t have to buy instruments again every year, but that’s at least $90k a year.

Rutgers would cost you $100k total for 4 years of dental school. 4! Versus $100k a year at NYU. Just making sure you know what you and your parents are being signed up for. I don’t know anything about your finances, it isn’t my decision.

Now that I’m thinking about it, would you say it would be a better decision if I applied for NYU regular pre professional dental for 4 years and then apply to other schools for dental school? I understand that its expensive and that would be a personal decision, but if i still plan on doing early decision to NYU, would this be a better option in terms of acceptance rate and costs?

Rutgers accelerated BA/DMD is actually not applied to fresh out of high school; you can go to Rutgers SEBS and then, if you get 3.5+ for the first 60 credits, as well as 20+ on each DAT subscore, go to Rutgers Dental after three undergraduate years.

NYU ED is a better option only in terms of acceptance rate; it is notorious to shaft ED admits from financial aid.

With your ACT score, I don’t think ED is a must. Do you absolutely love NYU and would go at all costs?

If your goal is to be a dentist, nobody is going to care where you got your BA in biology or whatever from. They won’t even care where you went to dental school. I don’t know where my dentist went to school.

It’s just something to think about. If you did Rutgers BA/DMD it would cost a total of $190k, undergrad + d school. That’s $300k saved if you don’t go to NYU. If your parents were planning to pay that much, would they just give you the $300k to help you start a practice? A practice can cost anywhere from $300k to $1M.

I really do want to go to NYU (based on college visits, family, etc.) , but what I’m thinking about doing now is maybe just undergraduate at NYU and then apply to different schools for graduate school. Plus I don’t think parents would give me the 300k to start a practice, and instead they would probably tell me to work for someone until i save enough to start my own practice. My major issue with going to Rutgers is the competition and sheer number of students that would applying from the same school as me to grad schools. I feel like that alone is a big disadvantage when applying to graduate school from a school like Rutgers since there would be so many people ahead of me in terms of ranking and extracurriculars that I wouldn’t really stand out in a pool of applicants from the same school.

The yield for NYU accelerated pre-dental is ~20%, primarily for financial reasons.

Are you confident that you can get 3.5+ as an undergraduate? And 21+ on the DAT?
