Chances for NON-ivy league schools; and other issues.

my list of schools:

University of Washington
Whitman College
Carleton College
Colby College
Colgate University
Macalester College
Scripps College
University of Puget Sound
Boston University

condensed version (but please read the long version. plllleeeaaase.)

white female, average suburban public school. i want to be a genetic counselor and double major in biology and biological anthropology, but i usually list undecided on everything because i dont know for sure yet.

GPA: 3.7ish unweighted.

SAT: 680 CR, 660 M, 640 W. 1340/1990. This was with no studying, i can probably get 2150+ if I study.

Class Rank: At least in top 10%. Our school doesnt weight GPAs though so the rank doesnt mean much. I dont know if we release rank to colleges.

Teacher recs: should be ok, but not outstanding.

Essays: should be very good.

ECs:
-sports medicine internship, 500 hours. color=red[/color]
-(varsity?) bowling, 4 years.
-i have shoved over an extra year into my four years of school. we generally have 24 credits at graduation, 6 per year, but i will have 34 or so.
-60 dual enrollment credits
-national merit commended.
-outstanding social studies student 2006.
-outstanding spanish student 2005.
-because my mom is sick, i help out around the house and with my younger sister.

my dad died suddenly at the end of my sophomore year, and its hit me pretty hard. also, my mom has had some health problems, i am not really confident that she will be alive in 5-10 years. i am starting to feel better but junior year was hell. i missed a ton of school and my overall gpa went from 3.9 to 3.75ish. my junior year gpa was only like 3.35ish. however, i did well on all my ap tests, and i knew all the material in my classes. the decrease was because it was hard for me to be a functioning person and go to school every day and interact with everybody.

long version (please read! :D):

Junior:
AP Biology: A-/A- (4 on test, average was 2.5)
AP US History: B+/B (5 on test, average was 3)
AP Psychology: A (5 on test, average was 1)
World Literature: A
Sports Medicine: A-/.....C-. i started college in the summer term before high school ended, so i had to stop going to high school about a week early. i turned in my final project to his mailbox in the office, but apparently he didnt get check it or something. i have him next year for advanced sports med, so i will ask him to change it for me. i should have like a B+, at worst. would it really kill my chances if for some reason, he wouldnt change it?

College Classes taken in Junior year:
Even though these classes are only a quarter long, 5 college credits = 1 high school year, so each grade is calculated into my GPA as two high school semesters.
Math 119 (algebra): B-/B-
Anthro 101: A-/A-

Summer 2007 classes (I will have the grades by the time apps are due):
Math 120 (trig): predicting an A
Anthro 202 (cultural anthropology): predicting an A-
Chem 121 (inorganic chem): predicting an A-

Senior Year:
AP European History:
Advanced Sports Medicine:

I will have the grades for these classes by the time applications are due.
Math 124 (calc 1): predicting an A-
Anthro 201 (biological anthropology): predicting an A
Polsci 210 (american government): predicting an A

My unweighted GPA right now, without the predicted grades or the C-, is 3.76. With the C-, its a 3.71. With the predicted grades, its a 3.77. Basically, its not going to change that much from a 3.75ish. My school doesnt weight GPAs, but I figured it out myself and its over 4.0.

Issue 1: The C-. If my teacher lost my project or thinks I never turned it in or something, and he wont change the grade, how much will this affect my chances?

Issue 2: The sports med internship. This is a two-year internship that I will finish by senior year. Can I still put it on my app even though I wont have the certificate and stuff until after apps are due?

Issue 3: Junior year gpa decrease. I know that this is the most important year, but unfortunately its also the year my dad died. Will my ap grades and the projected grades that i get in my college classes during the summer and fall terms make up for my junior year gpa?

If you read this entire thing, thank you, i love you.

Send me your chances link and i will chance you back.

You won't be punished for a grade dip due to personal tragedy. There's a place on the app to note anything that may have affected your performance.

Go ahead and list the internship, but say something like 'will receive certifiate upon completetion'.

You scores are a little low for some of the schools on your list. But Macalester and Carleton are a lot more about the individual than the numbers, so I think you're a great applicant for them. Colby/Colgate/maybe BU seem like the iffier schools.

Goodl luck!

Well, I never feel comfortable predicting someone else's chances, but I just wanted to wish you good luck. Don't worry about your junior grades. They will not affect your admissions decision.

If you need any advice on the college application process and all, just pm me here.

Again, good luck!

thanks ses and jss330.

bump.

maybe you should try for better schools if you can just increase your sat score

With a 3.76 unweighted, I say you have a good shot at going to places like UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC or UCSD. Try it and see if you can put your feet to any of those school. I suggest that you try it out maybe. Who knows what can happen.

nice 3 year old grave dig

I would recommend retaking your SAT score if you want to get into BU.
