If applying ED, how do the chances look for this applicant?
Give it a try, but both ACT and GPA are below admission average. That suggests a low chance for ED.
@billchso these aren’t my stats nor am I applying to NU but the ECs are probably lacking for a school like northwestern right?
As a new member of the Class of 2019, I would strongly advise the following: just put your best foot forward. Even kids with 36s and 4.0 and loads of extra-curricular activities receive rejection letters. Because of the lack of transparency in the college app process NONE of the people on this website can say with any certainty who will get in and who won’t. All you can do is put your best foot forward with everything, and leave it up to these scary admissions officers to decide your fate for you. If you can get a 33, get a 33. If you can do something awesome throughout the year, do it. But there’s no formula to getting in at all, it’s all just a blur.
@dvdltmr - that’s all good, but if the OP can leverage ED at one school make it count. Using it on a school where you are below their typical range isn’t the best idea.
Then, what is the point of this thread?
@billcsho to prove to my friend that he is about to make a huge mistake
I have the same stats as your friend and I’m applying ED to Northwestern. Northwestern loves early decision almost more than any other university (except maybe UPenn too), and last year they accepted half of their incoming freshman class through early decision. Although I’m not confident, I know I still have a chance. Your friend does too. Let him apply ED and thank me later.
Early decision is great for:
- legacy (full pay)
- athletes
- special admits
If those numbers are stripped out from the totals the early admissions rate wouldn’t seems high. Those unhooked typically need to have very solid stats (and are often full pay) to be accepted early.
It’s going to be a bit of a reach but you still definitely have a chance. If you really badly want to go to NU then go for it 100%. good luck
