Rank: 51/441 (Top 11.5%) My high school is extremely competitive and public. I think we are ranked 3rd in the state of North Carolina.

I had solid recs, one from my APUSH class last year (my teacher had clear favourites, and people always told me I was one of them) and my AP Language teacher (She could never say a bad thing about anyone and she loved my writing.) I think my essays were good and reflected me as a person.

SAT Score (not sent): 2160; 660 CR, 720 M and 780 W (9 Essay)
ACT Score (Sent): 33 (34 W, 34 R, 34 M, 28 S, 9 Essay)

I've taken 9 AP classes, 3 junior year and 6 senior year. I got a 5 on the AP exams for APUSH and Psych, and a 4 for English Language. I'm taking AP Calc AB/BC, AP Human Geo, AP Euro, APES, and AP Lit this year. I’m expecting to get 4s and 5s on all of them (except maybe a 3 on Calc AB). I've taken 4 years of French. All other core classes that I have ever taken have been honors.

I had all A's Freshman and Sophomore years, with 2 A's and 6 B's junior year, and right now I have 3 A's, 4 B's and 1 C this year (in Calc). Although, it is important to note that my school works on the 7 point system and not the 10 point system, so a 90 is a B and not an A. If my school did do the 10 point scale, I would have had 1 B junior year and 1 B this year (no C), with about 3 B's being borderline (90-ish).

I’ve applied as an English/Journalism major.

I have been a member of many clubs. My major clubs have been the Interact Club (with which I do a lot of community service) for 3 years, the Environmental Club for 2 years, the Book Club for 1 year, and the French Club (I am the secretary of the French Club and work hard to keep everything in order) for 3 years. I also joined GSA and Young Dems this year, but they weren’t formed in time for me to put them on the app. :(

I applied to a lot of schools. I got accepted to Wingate University with a $60,000 scholarship, Appalachian State University, Elon University with an $18,000 scholarship, UNC Chapel Hill, The University of York (in England), the University of St. Andrews (in Scotland), and, my big fear, I got WAITLISTED at U Chicago.

Because of the waitlisting, I'm scared for my chances at Northwestern now. What do you guys think? What are my chances? Thanks :)

You have a pretty good shot, in my opinion. As of right now it just depends on luck and faith. Good Luck! :)

Thanks Harvard :)

Well, your biggest problem is the GPA. To start with, a 3.6 GPA is not so great, but the thing is that if you had a 3.25 freshmen year and worked up to a 4.0 senior year, it would look much better. I think the major downward trend is going to hurt you. Other than that I mean you have an OK shot, but I would say it is a low/mid reach

Thats my fear Jleww. I knew taking harder classes would mean I would have the downward trend. Oh well, at least I tried. Thanks anyways :)

Just in my opinion, I tend to place the University of Chicago and Northwestern on about the same “level” of getting in; it seems like you have a good “fit” for this type of school, so I would say you have a good shot of getting in… only thing, as mentioned before, would be the downward trend of grades…

Okay, thank you Nicky :)

Definitely have a good shot at Northwestern, but like other posters have said downward trends are never a good thing. I have to say I’m impressed with the AP’s you’ve taken and colleges might be too. Everything is solid especially test scores. I’d definitely say UChicago is more difficult to get into, but that’s just my opinion.
^The link you provided was for Northwestern College in MN, not Northwestern University in Evanston IL.

ohh yeah thanks for catching that. [College Search - Northwestern University - NU - At a Glance](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)
this should be the right one.

Thanks Joe :)

Everything sounds good, apart from the downward trending grades of course, which might be a big factor. However, I think it will all come down to the essays. If they are great, and i mean way above average, they will triumph over the grade part.
Scores are in range, and you also have good ECs. However, couldn’t it have been better if you were in something that had to do with journalism?
IMO, you have a good chance for northwestern; how good the chance is depends on your essays.

It is only your GPA that is holding you back.
If it wasn’t for that, you would have had a solid chance, in my opinion.
I would say low reach. but still a pretty good chance since your weighted GPA is good.

Chance me back?

Thanks Mohaim and dhs :)

I feel that your a real down to earth cat and i like that about u. i hope u get into all ur colleges.

Thanks Infallible :)

Idk! You have a lot but no leadership positions in all thise ec’s! And gpa is a little low. I would say high target/low reach

Thats Amit :)

Like many posters have said, your GPA is kind of low and the downward trend isn’t really a good thing, but I still think you have a decent chance at Northwestern. I really hope you get in, but admissions are so unpredictable that you never know. Good luck!

Thanks LJ :)
