I'm worried that I got a few B's freshman year. Do you think my GPA would ruin my chances?

My dream school is Northwestern.

Chance me for Northwestern, Vanderbilt, and University of Virginia

Hi Vman77, your SAT and ACT scores are top notch. However, when I look at your long extracurricular activity list, I can’t help but get the impression that you are “joining every club in the school.” I feel this way because none of your activities have any resemblance to one another and you are doing so many. If you enjoy doing one or two of those things more than the rest, I would just stick with the one or two activities and take them further. Also, make sure you can afford Northwestern. I got accepted, but I had to turn down the offer because it is $65,000 per year!

I have to agree with muaythaiguy. Your ECs are a little all over the place and don’t really give us a sense of who YOU are. That is after all the most important thing for colleges of the caliber of Northwestern. They want someone who’s going to benefit their university and society as a whole. They want centrally focused minds who know what they want to do. I urge you to perform as well as you can first semester of your senior year and seek greater involvement in 1 or 2 ECs that you are REALLY passionate about. Couple that with your scores and I think you should be well off!

Northwestern - low stretch

Chance back? [Chance The New Guy! Penn, Harvard, Chicago and More!!](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1509778-chance-new-guy-penn-harvard-chicago-more-will-chance-back.html)

NWU: Reach

The other posters do have it right. Your extracurriculars at least appear to be scattered. It is almost as if you are a jack of all trade, but master of none. I could definitely be wrong, though. It is of course possible that you are very dedicated to some of those clubs, but just didn’t write that here. Anyhow, you have excellent test scores. Your GPA is literally an A- average, which is below that average for Northwestern, and to a lesser extent, Vanderbilt and U of Virginia. Anyhow, there are no large weaknesses in your application, and you should be competitive everywhere that you apply.

University of Virginia: High Match
Vanderbilt: Low Reach
Northwestern: Reach/ Low Reach

Chance me back (I’m also looking at Vanderbilt)?

Forgot to add something. I know for a fact that Northwestern has ED. If you really want to go there, and can afford it, ED would be a good idea. ED would bring it to a definite low reach, with admission being more probable than not.

NU: low reach
Vanderbilt: high match/low reach
UVA: high match
Focus on an EC that shows passion and interest

Well, I just finished sophomore year, so do you think it would be smart to delve into some of the activities I’m already involved in? Also, what are my chances for Emory?
Thank you everyone.

You’re a sophomore? If so, you are in excellent shape. Get A’s in everything next year, and that should bring your GPA to a 3.8 or higher. Do the extracurriculars that you are most passionate about. I am not saying drop them if you don’t want to, but concentrate the most on a few, and try to start leading them. If you really got a 35 on the ACT, and 2310 on the SAT as a sophomore, you are clearly very gifted. Emory is high match/ low reach. Really, you are in excellent shape. Just don’t slack off in classes, and Northwestern is attainable.

Thank you very much!

I agree with Debater. If you’re a sophomore with a 2300+ SAT and 34+ ACT, Northwestern should be among the less selective colleges your looking at (that was a joke before anyone attacks me). I’d call it a high match/low reach as of now but, if you really are a sophomore, use your time to bump up your ECs and GPA. Beyond that, good luck!

If you could chance me back, I’d really appreciate it!
