My S22 is considering applying to UT for CS. We are OOS. He is in a full IB program and will graduate with an IB diploma. He is possibly a NMSF, definitely a National Merit Commended Scholar, 34 ACT, weighted GPA 4.35, unweighted 3.95. He is President of his high school robotics team. This year he was one of the winners of Apple’s SWIFT competition at WWDC. We realize the cost. What are his chances given how much the Texas publics are protected for in state students? Thanks.
I’d consider it a high reach, especially for CS.
8% of each class is comprised of OOS students. (90% in-state, 2% international). I agree CS is a high reach, it’s also possible to gain an acceptance to the school, but not the major.
Even though a great school, have your S give some thought to being in a non-geographically diverse school. Also Texas has its own app, which is time consuming, and requires a resume (required practically speaking, even though it says optional).
If you are going to consider UT, at least look at Turing Scholars. There is significantly more balance to in state vs oos, plus the applications are reviewed by professors, allowing your son’s robotics and SWIFT to stand out.
High reach. What state are you in. What other schools interest him ? How high in math is he going ? How many APs? His weighted GPA, if using a +1 for AP and .5 for Honors, is a bit low.
Also how many APs does his school offer? If they offer a few and he takes a few it’s ok. If they offer many but he takes a few, not as good.
What’s his math ACT? 34 outstanding but there’s many kids at top programs with 34.
He should apply of course, but you need a robust list of reach, target, and safety schools l. UT is a reach for him. Another UT…UTK has very good CS and would be a safety with merit.
What is your home state ? Why UT? Does he have a geographical or size preference ? What can you afford etc.
Again, apply UT but he needs an overall plan. OOS at UT is tough. CS makes it that much tougher.
Your son has a good record but so many with great records are applying to the same programs.
He is in a full IB private high school. So, there are no AP courses. He takes 4 HLs for two years and 2 SLs for two years. The weighting is odd. He only gets a +0.5 for HLs in freshman and sophomore years. He gers a +1 for HLs in junior and senior years. He has had 1 B in high school, all other grades are A. Thus, 4.35 weighted 3.95 unweighted.
We are in Tennessee. If you are telling me it’s CS program is good, I will take some convincing. There’s issues at UTK about paying the physical plant staff.
As for ACT, again a 34. 32 in math. 36 in science.
I was saying from one UT to another. Just coincidence you are in TN. UTK is well regarded. Financially Bama is loaded and you’d get lots of $$. For stuedebts at your level it’s cheaper than UTK. Arizona as well. I don’t know your budget or what type school you are looking at. I can throw out all the players…case Western, Pitt, Purdue, UMASS, WPI, RIT, Rochester, RHIT etc.
I’m simply saying you need all three levels of schools. UT is not impossible but improbable. So keep it on your list but make sure your list is balanced.
