I'm hoping to raise my below average sat scores this fall. Will be applying to the engineering school.

The admissions lady at U.Va told me legacy gives a little help to OOS students.

I would re-take the SAT. I don't know if those scores are high enough.

You know, I would call and directly speak to an admissions officer NOW, when they have the time. Phone #: is on their website, bottom left of home page.

I just called to find out about timing the submission of the application. She said they don't really start reading applications until January, but get 1,000 applications before December, and then 15,000 in December. I want them to see my d's senior grades, so she will be applying in December.

We start reading in November, usually around Thanksgiving, if there are complete files that are ready to read. If you look at my blog, you can see that the first day of reading last year was November 5th.

I fear that your SAT's will hurt you. Your rank is good and you have nice EC's. I think you'll have a chance if those SAT scores come up. It really is possible to study for the SAT, so study hard>>or consider taking the ACT exam. You are within reach, but not quite there right now.

I am curious to know what the lowest SAT scores were the last couple of years for OOS admits, legacy or not. I understand that scores are just a portion of the package, but it would be interesting to know what kind of scores have been successful for OOS admission.

Your transcript will be the most important if anything. From what the CC statistics tell me, the adcom is harsher on poor transcript, high SATs than the other way round. Also, try ACTs. I had a 2100 (an OK score) and at that point, the fact that I liked the ACT "style" better (though I messed up on the science section -- 27! I had never encounted a format like that too) helped me a little bit -- a 32 is a bit higher than the percentile equivalent of a 2100, I think.

Haha, but I never got the chance to send my ACT scores to UVA though.

What is your main issue on the SAT? Time management?

To galoisien,
I am just curious to see the range of SAT scores from OOS students who were admitted. D is currently #1 in her class with a 4.75 GPA out of 5.0 (a 5.0 would be if all of your classes were AP for every subject in high school and all grades were an A) Last SAT in June was 1420/2160. She will take it again this fall. ECs are strong for forensics, cross country, leadership positions in Model UN and Youth Legislature. Volunteer work at local Children's Hospital and a mission trip to Peru. Job at local kids Science Center. Coeditor of school newspaper, poetry awards, etc.

get ur sats up, take more aps, legacy will help definitely. gpa is pretty good. i dont know, id say ur borderline to below-average. must write good essays, and study hard for the SATS

I've only taken the sat once, and now i'm regretting that. I took it the first time without any kind of prep. I'm taking it again in October and hopefully will raise my score atleast 100 points.
