Chances for Out-of-State Student?

Hey Terps, I just wanted to get some feedback - all would be appreciated!

Male New Jersey Resident
Intended Major: Computer Science
SAT: 2010 (580 CR, 760 M, 670 W)
ACT: 32 (35 English, 30 Math, 30 Reading, 31 Science, 30 Combined)
GPA: About a 95/100 (my high school is one of those magnet schools, it uses the QPA system) If I were to guess, I think I'd be somewhere from a 3.8-3.9 (I got a B in English this past year)
Course Rigor: All classes are honors level, offers limited amount of AP's until Senior Year - I still feel it's limited. Anyways, I am taking 3 AP's this coming year after only taking 1 this past year (I wish I took 2) - 2 was the maximum amount without skipping any classes through summer.
Rank: Class Not Ranked, only 70 in my grade
E.C.: This is my weak point.. not as involved as many people, been volunteering at my church for 4 years and have been on the golf team, that's about it

jibler do not submit the ACT score the math score is to low for a computer science major.Take as many AP’s as possible and explain the limitations in your application, join a club or two that truly interest you and write a killer essay. You should be in!

Yeah, I’m planning to take the ACT again… definitely screwed up that one when comparing it to my SAT math score.

I’m part of some clubs, but I don’t have any leadership positions in them - nothing really to set me apart. Hope I can get in…

Thanks for the response.

Would my low ACT math score affect my admission that much?

I still believe you have a good chance of admission. Comp Sci is not an LEP major, and a 32 ACT was still 75% tile of ACT scores for admitted students of the class of 2017 at UMD. Your GPA is within range as well so I would not be too stressed.

Excellent shot. Good grades and great ACT.

Thanks for the responses. I know I’m not cut out for the BK scholarship, but would I qualify for any others? (probably not, I’m assuming)

If you get your SAT CR score up and submit only the SAT scores, you might get some scholarship money. I really don’t know how to evaluate the ACT. 32 sounds like a pretty good score overall, but your reading and math are both 30. I think your SAT math score puts you in a higher percentile, so I would take the SAT one more time and really concentrate on the CR. Over 700 on W section would be a help, too.

How hard are you willing to work to bring up those scores? That is the question!

I wouldn’t worry too much about the number of EC’s. Demonstrating consistency and depth is important, too. As mentioned on other threads, EC’s don’t matter so much with regard to scholarships from what we can tell.

SAT CR is a struggle for me. After taking the SAT a second time, I was surprised to see my Writing score stay under 700. I’m just really much more comfortable with the ACT & I’m not sure I have time to take the SAT1 since I’m taking subject tests in October.

I’d be willing to work my hardest - if I knew I had the time.

A 32 equates to a 2100 SAT - my 30 in reading is the 90th percentile, my 30 in math is 95th percentile. SAT math - 97 . SAT CR - 76th.

Thanks for the reply!

Also, I know SAT subject tests likely won’t play a role in my admissions at UMD, but I’m also trying to apply to a couple others that require it (but frankly, I’m more interested in UMD - thinking about applying early, especially being out of state)

I see what you’re saying about the SAT and ACT. If you can bring your ACT composite score up to 33 you’ll be in the upper 25th percentile of 2013 admits. I think if you’re looking at another go at either SAT or ACT you should go with the one you’re more comfortable with.

Remember to check the percentile rankings for your SAT subject test scores, and only send the ones that are great to MD, if you send them at all, as they’re not required.

Best of luck to you!

Should the essay file and/or the activities resume be formatted in any specific manner?

I just applied to meet the priority deadline!

Got an actually decent list of extracurriculars and awards since I posted this… I guess it wasn’t initially as bad as I thought

I also submitted a SAT II Math II score of 770 and an ACT where I got a 32 on the Math and Reading
