chances for outta stater?

<p>any ideas on chances?? i really should decide soon...their deadlines in like 10 days!!
asian female, nj, immigrated when i was 10
SAT I (may 05) 720m, 680cr, 660writing
SATI (oct 05) 740 m, 660 cr, 720 writing
highest compositie: 2140
SAT II's: 680 math iic, 660 physics (yea...not that high)</p>

<p>really really competitive high school, top 50 in nation i think, so i think im only top 30%, i know that everyone else's got really high ranking...so im kinda worried here, we have no rank tho, gpa is 3.8ish
5 ap's by graduation: stat, econ (micro and macro), psych, lang, and calc
(not that many cuz my school has like qualifying tests for ap's, so its kinda hard to get in in the first place) but all other classes are accelerated/honors</p>

<p>EC's:
black belt karate
karate teacher to kids ages 3 to 10, teacher to special needs (physical/mentally ill), karate camp counselor
2004 nationals: 1st place
2003 nationals: 3rd place</p>

<p>clarinet for 5 or so years, 1st section in school band</p>

<p>internship at hospital, Neonatal intensive care unit, veryy cool experience</p>

<p>piano for like 12 years
played in carnegie hall, steinway hall
won competitions multiple times in diff years: young pianist competition of nj, music educators association of nj, young peoples music program, and 2 others whos name escapes me now...o and 2 consecutive years 1st place talent show in my school. im sending in a cd of my playing (actually for my other schools i did, but does ucla take supp stuff like cd's since they get so many apps?)
accompanist for everything imaginable: school musical, chorale (elite singing group of my high school), and im like the conductor/teacher too, fundraising activities for AIDS (broadway cares/equity fights AIDS), president of musiCares (we go to diff nursing homes and play music), played with church choirs for sunday services
school activities include key club, modern issues, red cross, ummm sorta french lit mag</p>

<p>i got a supp rec from my piano teacher...again does ucla take supp stuff since they already got so many apps?</p>

<p>UCs don't even require, or should I say, accept recommendations. So they wouldn't even want a supplement recommendation.</p>

<p>Anyway, I'm an out-of-stater applying too (NY! lol).</p>

<p>academic stats are about average for the incoming freshman class, but of course you'd always want to be above average. then again, you do have some nice EC's, like playing at carnegie hall.</p>

<p>your chances are very slim coming from out of state. i am from New York and last year, i applied to 3 UC's (not UCLA though) that were supposed to be safeties for me based on my GPA and SAT scores, and i did not get in to any of them.. so don't get your hopes up. they only admit like 5% of people from out of state. you'd be better off applying to a private school in California because they don't give priority to California residents.</p>

<p>Wow, really? 5% of out of staters get in? That's rough :p A quick run-down, I'm ranked 18 out of 330 (ouch, lol) at a competitive public HS on Long Island. My SATs are 2320 (790m, 760cr, 770w), SAT IIs include 800 on math IIc, 760 on US Hist, 730 on Physics. My passion is in astronomy research and I communicated that in my app. I'm going to be first author on two published papers later this year and I'm presenting my research next week at the American Astronomical Society conference. I've won a few nice research awards, most notably making national finalist in Siemens. I figured UCLA was my safety but maybe I'm wrong :p For those who know the school better, should I be worried?</p>

<p>your SAT I scores and GPA were not impressive at all and would not make any of the UCs your safety, for the most part. In fact, for in-state students those scores would probably be on the borderline to be accepted at the less competitive UCs. This gal here has a fabulous chance, but it comes down to how write the personal statement was written.</p>

<p>to clarify, the acceptance rate of out-of-state students is not 5%. that number sounds more like the percent of out-of-state students at UCLA. </p>

<p>i don't have stats on me right now, but the out-of-state acceptance rate is usually a bit lower than the in-state acceptance rate. (for example, one year in-state was 23% and out-of-state was 19% if i remember correctly). this is also somewhat deceiving because the out-of-state applicant pool is also stronger.</p>

<p>Contrary to rumor, the out-of-state admit rate isn't dramatically lower than the in-state admit rate... as kfc4u indicated, the out-of-state applicant pool typically boasts higher SAT I/II stats than the in-state applicant pool, and applies for the more competitive majors which sustain UCLA's reputation outside of California, such as Engineering and Film. The ~5% figure mentioned above comes closer to the out-of-state student population of those matriculating to UCLA after being admitted. You and your competitors are what makes it harder to get into UCLA, rather the school's somewhat arbitrary admissions policies.</p>

<p>This may be redundant, but the acceptance rate for out-of-staters is only roughly 2% lower than the acceptance rate for in-staters (and that's coming from the information session at Berkeley)</p>

<p>GuitarManARS- I don't think you can call it a safety but I'd say you are 99% in! I got in last year with similar EC as you and SAT's that were a bit lower than yours so I'd say no worries! I was out of state to0. Good luck!!!!</p>

<p>Ah, statistics . . . I believe that when folks quoted the 5 percent figure, they meant that 5 percent of those students accepted came from out of state, not that 5 percent of out-of-state applicants were accepted. Just a thought.</p>
