Chances for preferred admit at Ross '12

I'm going to be a senior this fall at a competitive school in the Massachusetts.

I want to pursue a career in finance.

Here are my stats:
Generally pretty good grades (6As, 8A-s, and 6Bs)
I calculated my unweighted UM gpa to be around 3.64 which is weighted at 3.90 at our school. I have one of the most rigorous course loads with 3 APs last year(bio(4), ush(4), stats(5)) and 4 more next year (physics, chem, psych, calc bc).

I am in the top 10% of my class of ~400 people

SATs (taken once and will retake)
2200 (720 M, 720 CR, 760 WR)

SAT IIs
Chem - 750
Bio - 720
Math IIc - hopefully atleast 750+ because I am studying all summer for it

Extra-Curriculars
- 9, 10, 11, 12 Two year captain of the Forensics team (placed in the top 6 at numerous local events)
- 9, 10, 11, 12 Elected Student Council Representative (Only class elected member for all 3 years of high school, so far and VP for senior year)
- 10, 11 Science Team (placed 1st in the state in the Chemistry Lab event and 4th in a few other events)
- 10 A member of DECA (placed second in the district, top 10 in the state, and also received an achievement award for scoring fourth highest on the state written test in the event Sport and Entertainment Marketing and Management)
- 9, 10, 11, 12 Math Team
- 10, 11, 12 National Honor Society

Other Awards I didnt cover
- Scored in the 91st percentile on the National German Exam both my freshman and sophomore year (my teacher is extremely difficult, that's why my grades don't show it. How will colleges view this?)
- AIME qualifier by getting over a 100 on the AMC 12 sophomore and junior year

I also started my own web company that makes a few hundred dollars per month.

If I don't get admitted into the preferred program I will probably settle for LS&A as a freshman and than apply again to Ross the following year.

The Ross pre-admit program is very competitive... less than 10% admission rate. A great essay can really make a difference... especially for someone like you with good, but not very top, stats. I would focus on the web company and the skills required and process used to start up and run this business. Use the essay to highlight the qualities you think will make you a business leader.

Admissions chances improve significantly if you apply as a freshman... assuming you make good grades (approx. 3.6) with a fairly rigorous courseload. This is an over-generalization since many factors come into play.

Statistically, you have a chance. As Anhydrosis says, be sure to write a great essay. Given the selectivity of the preadmit program, essays will matter a great deal.

They will like the web company a lot. As Anhydrosis said, you should play that in to your essay somewhere. It's a crapshoot but you have a decent shot.

So can I consider getting into UMich in the first place as a match/safety?

The University of Michigan is a safety for you. Your merits and accolades from high school would easily overshadow those of many freshmen in the LSA. Your web company is a major advantage so make sure to pamper it on your Ross essays. The spirit of entrepreneurship is a common asset among us preferred admits. The admissions staff can review an entire pile of applications with students who have attained higher SAT scores, but they will find very few students who have acquired the experiences of pioneering their own e-business.

Granted, the Ross preferred admit has less than a 10% acceptance rate. However, I am convinced that if you fittingly portray your achievements on the application and essays, you will be the one in ten applicants that gets accepted.

On a side note, would you care to elaborate on your e-business? I am placing a lot of emphasis of your chances on your web company. Assuming it is as great as you make it sound, it would help you tremendously. Also, try to increase your SAT I scores on your senior year; as of now, they are considered sub-par.

Good luck!

bahamutscale, just curious... how did you determine that 2200 was "sub-par"? I would guess it is at least average... and above average for those accepting admission. The 720 math may be somewhat below average, but the 720 CR is probably close and the 760 writing seems high. Ross does put more relative weight on quantitative skills, but I believe this judgment is based on more than just an SAT or ACT score.

I think any questions about your mathematical abilities should be answered by your AMC score. To score above 100 as a sophomore I think is an accomplishment. I'm sure most math people here don't agree, but I couldn't do it as a sophomore. I think a 100 on your AMC says a lot about your quantitative skills, so emphasize that somehow.

qualifying for AIME is nothing special, unless u score something decnet on the AIME. 31 out of the 40 kids who took it at my school qualified the year before, i dont know about last year since i didnt bother taking it....

and 720 CR + 720 M = 1440 M+V i dont think michigan puts much weight if at all on the writing section. 1440 is not high, it maybe slightly above average for OOS in general....but for preadmit??? i dont think so...

also if OP's the top 10% at his "competitive" high school, how come he scored 4s on 2 out of the 3 APs he took??? i dont think the high school is that "competitive"...i think too many people refer to their high school as competitive in these chance thread, but what does competitive actually mean??

so a slightly above OOS average SAT (1440) with a sub-average OOS GPA (3.64) , i think you could call it a safematch, but definitely not safety. and ross? i think the odds' not THAT great

what 31 out of 40 kids qualified? Wow, I must've come from a dumb hs. I was the first, and still the only person to qualify in my school's history.

I agree with bearcats on this one. His GPA is sub-par (3.64), and his SAT slightly above average (2200). My GPA and ACT score were almost equivalent (3.65 + 32 ACT), not to mention I'm in-state and alumni; yet I was deferred before accepted. I also want to mention I know of students with even better grades then mine who were rejected (3.7 + 33, deferred/waitlist/reject). Course I know there are ppl that had worse stats but got in, but I just want to make it a point that there is NO way that he is a "safety". I'd say he's just a match.

As for the ROSS PA, it's going to come down to his essays/EC's and how he presents himself, but I'd say it's a reach. Getting into ROSS PA is as hard as getting top 10 schools in the nation

Thanks for the feedback guys. I really appreciate it

Depending on your web business, that may be your ticket in. What is the nature of it?

I was accepted as a Ross pre-admit for fall 2007. SAT was only 2150. I am Hispanic and my essay focused on wanting to pursue a business degree and focus on the non-profit sector. However, after being accepted at Cornell, I chose Cornell and decided I can always get an MBA later. So, someone might have taken my spot if they called people off the waitlist.

I decided that I want to apply into the College of Engineering and Ross and if I don't get in PA, which I probably won't, I'll apply after freshman year. I also found that my high school may not be as competitive as I thought. We send many to Tufts but in terms of Ivies we had 3 Cornell, 1 MIT, 2 UPenn, 2 Brown out of 350ish.

How do my updated chances look?

Do the ross admssions people look at all of the essays that you submit to michigan or just the preferred admit one?
