Both President's scholars I know were valedictorians with a much higher SAT score than that :/

you probably need 2200 SAT or up

At a PSP meeting on a Preview Tech day, they said that 80% of recipients have 1500 or above on their SATs. They don't look at the Writing portion. Also, 60% were in the top 5 people of their class and 90% have straight As. Also, they are looking for passion about one or two things(music, hospital volunteering, etc.)vs. dabbling in a lot of things. Your stats look really good(SAT could be higher, but you make up for it other ways), I bet you make semifinalist, no problem!

Actually... yall might be surprised. So far, 7 people at my school have been selected as PSP semifinalists. Out of all of them, only 3 of them are in the top 5% of the class, and a majority did not even break 1500. However, I live in-state. Regardless, I really think that this year they are looking for people with really good leadership. Based on your stats, you have a really good chance. Good luck to us all!

I think they said they have a thousand semifinalists, but invite only 100 back for finalists. At that point they are equally divided by gender and in/out of state. So, as a female out of stater, you would need to be the top 25....The 100 all get scholarships, but they range from free rides down to $10K(maybe?).

Leadership and communication skills are just as important as intellectual ability and achievement.

The stats look very high for prior year finalists in that report on CC. So though leadership, communication, passion for research, are important, those items would have to be waaay up there among exceptional candidates to survive anything less than top stats in terms of grades, top courses, and test scores. The ones I knew when we were in Ga were kids who also were HPY candidates, and often had to decide to take tha scholarship and go to GT or go to one of those top schools.
