Chances for Princeton, Stanford, and Wharton?

Hey guys! I’m a rising junior so here are my stats:

ACT: 36 (one sitting)
SAT IIs: 800 on math, bio, and chemistry
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.8
APs: 5s on 5 of them, taking 5 this year
Courseload: pretty hard classes, college level math, the regular you know

ECs:

Really invested in Parkinson’s so
– ~600 hours of volunteering
– started a school club
– advocated to Congress/legislature
– started an initiative at the place I volunteered at
– raised $5,000 for research : the goal is $20,000, we’ll see if I get there
Also super interested in science
– Science National Honors Society President
– Chemistry Club Co - President
– Math Team President
– Research at state college
– USNCO (Chemistry Olympiad) semifinalist * 2
– USABO (Biology Olympiad) High honors * 2
– School Science Award for the highest achieving science student

And there’s also
– Mock Trial Captain because who doesn’t need a little drama in their life
– Volleyball Captain
– published a couple of op-eds
– Debate, won a couple of awards

Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
State: New Jersey
Intended major: Biology and Economics

What I’m concerned about is looking like someone who only does clubs and activities for college’s sake, but I seriously really really enjoyed everything I did.

Other schools I’m interested in are
– Ivies (but mostly PennWharton and Princeton)
– UVA
– Vanderbilt
– Georgetown
– Chapel Hill
– Johns Hopkins
– Duke
– UChicago
– Berkeley
– Rutgers

Thanks so much if you read all of this!! Any thoughts/suggestions/harsh criticisms would be really appreciated!!

You’re prolly getting into all those schools. I think you should add Rice to your list too

Chance me back?

Listen. Here’s the deal. You are in the best position possible. You have perfect academics. Your ec’s are outstanding. Your concern is valid: “What I’m concerned about is looking like someone who only does clubs and activities for college’s sake, but I seriously really really enjoyed everything I did.” But here’s the thing. You are the only one who can control that. Make colleges understand that you love everything you did. That comes through the essay and Additional Info sections. Make your story shine there. That’s honestly where so many of the country’s top applicants end up falling short, and where seemingly less qualified people on paper can shine. It’s what happened to me. I’m not nearly as qualified as you are in any area but presented my story in a way that really showcased who I am as a person and who I want to become and that helped me get results better than I could have expected. Also, I don’t know how much you care about UChicago (i.e. whether you are applying to it simply because it’s high-ranked), but if you are, they’ll see right through it. If you have a genuine interest in the school, message me if you have any questions. I was accepted EA, and that’s where I’ll be going. Good luck!

thank you guys! does anyone else have any input?

All the schools. I would research Dartmouth

@writer80 do you mean for wharton and princeton too?

Absolutely

bump?

I think you have a really good shot at getting into all the schools you listed besides the Ivies, Duke, and UChicago, which are high reaches for pretty much everyone. Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1890172-chance-a-non-stem-asian.html#latest

I think a tiny bit of it could also depend on who else is applying to these schools from your school. Like me and this other girl applied to JHU: She got in and I didn’t. But I was able to get into other amazing schools and will attend Princeton next year. Idk if that’s necessarily the reason I didn’t get into JHU, but it could be a factor that you might need to consider.
Also, at this point it is down to the essay. everyone has amazing stats, but not everyone does them genuinely.

I think you land at UVA or Rutgers

Thank you all for your feedback! Is there anything that is keeping my resume from being better?

The only thing holding you back is that you are a URM applying with a fairly typical profile. Lots of Asians interested in STEM fields. Your stats and scores look fine. How will you distinguish yourself from everyone else?

Your stats are great no doubt, but I’m afraid you might be seen by some Admissions officers as too typical Asian.

@sgopal2 hmm you’re absolutely correct. do you have any suggestions?

Focus on 1-2 themes and build that throughout your application. Too many divergent ECs, just trim down what you highlight. You also need to show international or national level recognition in this same theme.

If:

Is all related to ONLY Parkinson’s, then you have maximized your chances even more. Colleges like seeing students experiencing many different (random) activities in high school, so the students can discover their interests. Even more so, they like seeing someone be passionate about something, and Parkinson’s is a great way to capture their interest.

You have very good, nearly perfect credentials, but remember that even top students MUST get rejected from the top schools. I know students who scored over 750 on eight or more SAT IIs and were rejected from most of those schools, and others that took up to 15 AP/IB courses and were also rejected to almost all. But unlike those students and other high school students on this website, you have included two or three safety schools (definitely Rutgers, UVA and Chapel Hill are safeties but on a much higher level than Rutgers). It’s refreshing to see someone with such high credentials also consider other schools.

Anyways, I hope you get in  You definitely have a chance at all of them and should not hesitate to apply. Good luck!

Wow, five 5s on APs before junior year- that’s impressive. I’d say you definitely have a better chance than most people do at these schools, but then again, sometimes it just comes down to luck. I’d come up with a plan for the essay so you can stand out among similar applicants, I know that’s my struggle at the moment.
