Chances for Princeton

I'm not going to post my resume in all-inclusive detail, but I'd appreciate some comments/thoughts, in general.

GPA: 3.60 (unweighted at one of the nationally top-ranked private schools)

SAT: 750 v, 760 m, 800 w (Total: 2310)

Rank: Unranked

Curriculum: Most rigorous possible (11 AP classes, AP Scholar w/distinction)

Major EC points (To clarify, I am only listing the "big" ones):

All-State Musician (Been playing music forever, I play in all the honor bands/orchestras from local to statewide)

Superior (maximum rating) on the highest difficulty level solo pieces at Festival every year.

6 years of band (Band President, Student Conductor), 7 years of private lessons for music

4 year participant in 2 sports

National Honor Society

Summer Research (2 years in one lab, 1 in another. I published in a scientific journal lately)

Just wondering about some opinions (be detailed as possible please). My personal opinion (of my application in general) is that my GPA is by far my weak spot, but I am hoping it can be overcome by the other facets of my application.

Good chances at Princeton, better than most applicants.

Did you not take any SAT IIs?

Sorry, yes. I took SAT IIs in Literature 740, Math 2 740, and Physics 700. I also forgot my ACT was 34.

What state?

North Florida

I think you have a good chance, but with the more selective Ivy's, you never know.

If anyone can spare a moment, I would appreciate more feedback. Thanks in advance.

I think you are in, but I'm new here, so hopefully some CC vets get a chance to look this over.

Your stats are sufficient to get into Princeton. Your low GPA might pose a problem, but hopefully it was justified by your counselor in your recommendation.

While admissions at top tier schools like Princeton are a crapshoot, they are holistic. As an applicant, you may satisfy the minimum requirements to enter the consideration pool, but at that point, your essays, ECs, and recs are the key factors that will determine whether you are admitted or rejected. To be honest, I think you've got as good a shot as anyone if you get into the consideration pool. How sweet were your recs and essays?

^ The consideration pool... Basically something like shortlisting people who are academically qualified first, and then onto the finer aspects to see if they would bring out a good student body??

sigh I think you have a pretty good chance. Your scores are good. But are the EC's you've mentioned here the ones you gave on your app? And what about your essays and recs?

3.6 isn't that low.

hopefully.

I think my essays are really good (then again, everyone does). The one rec I read was amazing, and the other I didn't but I assume was very good.

GPA is a little low and I think the SAT 2's could be higher.
Your ACT and SAT scores are great though!
And your EC's are AWESOME - I think they'll really like consistency and devotion to a few activites rather than a laundry list of activites that you're barely involved in.
It's 50/50 I'd say.

Anyone else up to taking a perusal?

i was pretty much going to say what musicgal said. good essays and recs can give you a coin-flip shot, and that's really all you can hope for with a 3.6.

Please let us know what happens. Princeton might be on my list next year and I'd like to know if you get in. From the books I've read (you've probably read them too) I think it just depends on how many musicians from Florida (with the requisite numbers) apply this year.

This might be a long shot, but are there any people that have gotten into to college and think/know that music helped them?

Based on the lackluster tone and skeletal info. contained in your original post, admission to Princeton is not likely. Music can be a strong & influential EC. What are your two sports and do you plan to continue these sports in college?

sigh, i know two people with average academics that were accepted into ivy league schools because of their outstanding accomplishments in music. it is a hook.
