Hey. ^^ I was just wondering what everyone thought that my chances might be RD at Bryn Mawr. It’s definitly my number one school right now. I went and had an interview plus a tour right before winter break and thought it went so well.

I also suffered some family problems during my sophomore year and got two D’s. I sent a very well written letter to the head of admissions explaining the circumstances and how I’ve changed since then. I think my common app essay was awesome (I wrote it on the importance of Febreeze XD) and my ‘Why Bryn Mawr’ essay looked okay as well (at least to me, and I had two friends look over it as well).

I guess I’m just worried because my GPA is probably way lower than a lot of the other applicants, as is my math SAT score.

Also, how much will my midyear report help me? My GPA for the first marking period was a 92.8 (which would be a 3.7 on the 4.0 scale, I think…). My grades definitly show an upward trend from my sophomore year onward.

And one more question- does anyone know how long it takes them to update Virtual Bryn Mawr? I sent my application around the 19th or 20th of December and I’m a little worried that it’s still listed as incomplete. Edit- ARG. For some reason it’s showing that I’ve paid my application fee, but every other part of my application is still incomplete. I guess I’m going to call them on Monday so I stop stressing out. x.x

Thanks a ton. And congrats to everyone who got accepted ED.

the upward trend in your grades will definitely help you. i think that your midyear report will be very important. bryn mawr definitely takes the time to look at special factors like your sophomore year, so i wouldn't worry too much if it is only those grades that dragged down your GPA. good essays and a good interview will also help your chances. my only concern is that your math SAT is a bit low, so you really need to show them a good grade in math on your midyear report, or even consider having your math teacher (junior or senior yr) write a brief note about your effort and ability as a math student (obviously, this would be in addition to your other 2 recommendations)... good luck!

Can you give me the link to get to Virtual Bryn Mawr? I lost it and I can 't find it on their page...

Okay, thanks. ^^ My math grade last marking period (in a college prep level precalc class) was an 80... it'll probably be around the same this marking period, if not higher. I could probably get my math teacher from this year or last year to write a recommendation- should I get them to use the common app form, or just write a letter?

As for my math SAT... yeah, that was one of my concerns as well. I was wondering if my math score on the ACT was better, so maybe they'd take that into consideration as well.

Thank you so much. :)

personally, i would just ask the math teacher to write a letter, not the official common app teacher recommendation form, so that it is clear that your teacher is addressing any concern that your low SAT score may cause. you should pick teachers who will write about your most outstanding qualities in subjects which you excel for the official recommendations.

i'm sure that bryn mawr will consider any scores that you provide whether it be your grades from math class, SAT, ACT, or SAT2 (you might consider taking the math IC if you think that you can study and improve before the deadline for RD)...

Umm... how low do you think a person can go to be in the still okay, don't worry too much zone? :/ I mean, my SAT scores are in the middle 50% miraculously enough (at the v. v. v. low end, of course.) But I didn't take any honors math freshman and sophomore year and I started the track last year as a Junior when I got recommended and now I managed to bring up my Precalc Hon AB grade from a 72 to an 80 (which I was very proud of btw :D) and I'm in AP Stats and yeah. I'm also Asian, which makes things even rosier for me g

I know I'm not really all that great at math in terms of innate ability and that I'm just a bit above average for the most part but will the adcoms look at my transcript and go, "oh, she slacked off the first couple of years and finally came around Junior year," or "looked like she's a hard worker and even if she isn't so innately talented at such and such a subject, she tries anyway?" Should I send a letter, too, so they don't get the wrong idea?

I don't know... I've always been doubtful of my mathematical ability but I've always really tried and yeah :/ Personally, I want to be a journalist so I guess it shouldn't matter too much and I guess I just answered my question on whether or not I'm fine (I'm thinking I am, right? Since I'm definitely going for an english-related field) but should I talk about my struggles with trying to conquer math anyway? I figure it can't really hurt but I don't know if it'll show that I'm trying to explain something that doesn't have to be explained and that I'm trying too hard or something along those lines.

Meh. :/ I hate how insecure math makes me lol XD

Heh, I definitly slacked off my sophomore year. I figured a letter couldn't hurt, so why not? I don't want to be judged by one bad year of grades that was effected by my home life, especially not after I worked so hard last year (and am still working hard this year).

I'm going for an english related field too, or maybe psych. xD But I was never really sure how much they would look at my math skills. I'm really not that bad at math, I just have to try harder than most people and I usually test badly. x.x

I'll ask my teacher for a rec today, if I get the chance to see him. Do you think Bryn Mawr will accept it past the deadline? I'm not 100% sure if he can get it done by then... I'll have to see.

And Joycelene, I'm alegriadreams on LJ. XD It's weird how I keep seeing the same people on CC and on applyingbmc.

joycelene, i wouldn't write my essay on how hard i try in math unless there is a really special story to tell (or you can make it better than whatever else you might write about), but i would ask my guidance counselor to note the effort that i have put in and how you were recently recommended for the higher track in math and that you are also challenging yourself in AP stat. write your main essay on something about which you are passionate or learned some kind of important lesson...

backtothestars, don't worry if your math teacher's letter (it should be short!) arrives past the deadline (since it is not required anyway!) you just need to show the admissions committee that you are more capable in math than your SAT score shows.

good luck to both of you... and, of course, the above is just the opinion of a parent, not a professional... so take it for what it's worth, but that is what i would advise one of my own kids!

Yay, I got my math recommendation today. ^^ It's written by my precalc teacher who has only known me since the begining of the school year, but my mom read it and said it sounds amazing to her.

Right now I'm just trying to relax and not worry quite so much. Thanks for your help, fairburn.

Okay, thanks fairburn. :D Yeah, I think I'll have my guidance counselor mention it. Gaaaah, I'm just so panicky. I've been so stressed out this entire week... meh. XD
