9th, 10th, 11th grade were mainly B+'s and B's with some A's and a C in math in 9th grade. Honor Roll Quarters 1-4 in 9th and 10th grade, High Honors junior year fall term, Honor Roll senior year fall term.

No GPA or class rank given out to us, it's a very small school (30 kids in my grade).

Classes:

12th - Taking Honors English, Honors Precalculus, AP European History, Physics, Spanish III, Equine Science, and art (ceramics, paper mache, watercolors)

10th - Took Honor American Studies, Algebra I, German, Lab Biology
11th - Took English, Psychology, Spanish, Honors Chemistry, Honors Algebra II

Recommendations -
1 from my 11th grade english teacher, 1 from my 11th and 12th grade math teacher - should be decent. 1 personal rec from my houseparent/riding coach - excellent.

Essay - Good

Extracurriculars:
Horseback Riding - I compete my own horse in Massachusetts and Vermont regularly throughout the year. I keep her at my school and ride 6-7 days a week, it's a huge time commitment. Been doing very good at shows. Spring term last year and fall term this year I was awarded Most Valuable Rider.

Interscholastic Equestrian Team - competed in novice last year and was 3rd over fences at Zone finals (our zone is the most competitive, this was awesome) and 5th over at National Finals. This year I've gotten 2 firsts, a 3rd, and a 4th over fences, I'm one of the leading over fences riders in my region, am qualified for regionals over fences. I'm also the Team Captain.

Resident Assisant - I'm a Resident Assistant on Middle School Hallway. Student leader, role model for the kids, help out with evening study hall and check ins, a go-to person if they want to talk. My personal rec writer talked about this in her rec.

Riding Club - we meet kind of infrequently, fundraise to get new stuff for our schoolhorses.

Volunteer at horse shows throughout the year, served community meals once.
Work experience - worked as junior camp counselor at the beginning rider day camp at the barn I ride at when I'm home.

your SATs are within range, and with an average of about a B+? I think you're pretty good.
I don't know too much about Skidmore, but good luck! (I'm applying too, so hopefully we both get in :-D)

i'm applying to Skidmore also with similar grades and a little bit better SAT scores.
my ED application was deferred, but i'm sending better midyear grades, so hopefully i'll be good.
i'd say you have the same chances of getting in that i have... it's definitely possible, but i'm keeping my other options open

good luck

arky
keep us informed on your progress. My daughters counselor at school reccomended she apply next year and she has pretty much the same background(GPA ect) as you do- she is also an avid equestrian(ridden since she was 4)as we own 5 horses and compete in the region II hunter/jumper circuit. Can't wait to see how you do. :-) good Luck

S was deferred from Ed with a 3.7 and 1900 SAT. I think you are in great shape because you don't need financial aid. Son fell in love with Skidmore and really wanted to go there. He has now gotten into four great colleges (including a reach school where he got a great merit scholarship) so all bets are off now. He also got into my wife's and my college and they really are active in trying to get him to go there. Who knows at this point? Good luck!

has your son already heard from other places RD? can you tell us which ones?

Wells, Ithaca College, Siena and UVM. Waiting on Skidmore, Hamilton, Colgate, Bennington and Hobart. I said reach, I meant match instead. At this point, S is very happy with his choices. Next weekend, we are spending at Wells as he won a Wells Scholarship award and they are having a special weekend for the award winners. He is only thinking about the colleges he is in and will change his mind only if he gets in other places. He had four top choices, and he is in two of them. So, we are very happy right now.

that's great--congratulations! It sounds like your son chose well where to apply. It will be interesting to see how he chooses among these.

Thanks but I still feel that Skidmore is #1 on his list and he just doesn't want to feel too down if he doesn't get in.
