chances for recruited athlete

this is for my friend

GPA 97.8 (Weighted)/100
Class Rank: 40 of 449
SAT: 1350 (old scale, dont know breakdown)
SATII: 700 something physics, 490 Writing, 740+ math IC

pretty good ECs, 3 years varsity basketball (all conference)
recruited for lacrosse (4 years varsity, all county, 2005 LI Empire team)

Essay: average
Teacher recs: good

applying SCEA

Girl or Guy?

And it depends on the relationship of your friend and the coach, as in how high up is he/she on her list of recruits...

I think it depends on the level of support the coach has promised you. What were his exact words of recruitment? What "support" did he offer?

490 writing?

guy

yes 490 writing, he bombed it

the coach has pretty much said that theres a 99% chance he gets in (hes one of their top 3 recruits) but I know that anything can happen with harvard admissions

forgot his APs

10th grade
Euro History-3
11th Grade
American History-2
This year
Calc AB

hmmm - a 490 writing and a 1350 SAT might hurt even with a great deal of support... I am a recruited athlete w/ support as well, and the coach in my sport has made it clear that even top recruits often get hung up due to SAT's and grades, esp. with a 1840 SAT and not the strongest academics elsewhere... What about EC's other than the sport? Is your friend a URM? Any hooks besides being an athlete?

nope hes white (not many URM lax players)

i dont know details of his ECs but here they are

athletes helping athletes- 4 years
student life committee (dont know what it does)- 4 years
bridges- 4 years (bridges the gap from middle school to hs for 8th graders), he is a senior leader
he has worked at the town basketball camp over the last 4 summers, and several other sports related ECs

there may be others but I think this is it

I am thinking more positively about this. If he really is in their top three then I am 97% sure he is in even without a likely letter. They pre screen transcripts with standardized testing with admissions prior to telling any recruit if they should apply. Harvard will not recruit you if they do not think they can get you in. Of course each coach only gets so many spots for kids to fill but within those spots if admissions agrees that the statistics are good enough you are in good shape. Trust me on this one, I am one of these recruits for next year (although I needed no strings pulled academically).
