Chances for Rice + need suggestions

Hi everyone.

I'm currently a senior in high school, and I've already put together a list of schools. However, my counselor told me I need another reach school. Currently, the only real reach I have is Rice. If you have any input on my chances at Rice, please let me know!

For reach suggestions, things are slightly more difficult because I have some monetary limitations - Rice would be do-able, but that's about the limit if I don't get any merit aid (this is why Rice is my only reach right now). Are there other reach options for me?

Here are my stats:
-I'm a white female
-currently a senior at an advanced magnet high school in Texas
-ACT : 34
-weighted GPA : 4.47/4.80
-unweighted GPA: 3.6 :(
-10 APs by the end of Senior year (I've taken five and received three 5's and two 4's - can give specifics if needed)
-National Honor Society member
-5 years of French
-French National Honor Society member
-French club president
-4 years in marching band & concert band, 2 years in jazz band
-marching band section leader
-placed in Area band on clarinet 3 years (hopefully 4 & possibly State)
-100+ hours of volunteering with a pet rescue organization (I help market the rescued animals to potential adopters)
-I foster kittens with the same organization (through the Teen Foster program)
- undecided on any sort of major (feeling Liberal Artsy though)

Current college list:
Creighton University
Drake University
Gonzaga University
Seattle University
Trinity Unveristy
Tulane University
Rice Unversity
University of Puget Sound

I know this is a lot to read, thank you for any advice!

up

You have a good shot at Rice if you ED it. You have solid stats and test scores but your gpa brings you down a bit (don’t worry, I have the same issue lol).

Thank you, and I totally understand. My school has very tough classes and I thought my GPA was all good until I saw national stats. The counselors always tell us that they will try to emphasize that in the counselor rec, but there’s only so much you can do when there are people out there who do make a 3.95 with a similar courseload :)

You have the same stats I did applying for Rice as as senior, except I had a 3.73 GPA and didn’t take as many AP courses (only 5). I also went to a super tough school, I did early decision, got deferred to regular decision, and then got rejected haha. They’ve definitely gotten much more competitive. You really need to work on pulling that GPA up, otherwise they’ll be very on the border with you.

My brother, who applied to Rice and got in, had a 36 on his ACT and a 3.8 GPA. He got ED.

Hope this doesn’t discourage you! Apply anyway and see what happens!!!

Thanks for your advice

Don’t worry about discouraging me, I’m totally aware that it’s a high reach. And it looks like we have another similarity, because my sister got into Rice regular decision, but she had a 2400 SAT (she ended up at a different school though).

Thanks again!
