Chances for Rice RD? Will chance back!

Should get accepted with those stats

Bumping this a little bit! Got a 33 on my ACT (35E+W, 35M, 28R, 32S). My class rank is within the top 40% (REALLY REALLY COMPETITIVE SCHOOL).

Rice is a VERY competitive school looking for highly successful students.

40% will hurt your chances.

Rice’s acceptance rate for the last two years was only 15%. Rice has reported that of the people actually matriculating this fall, 40% had a perfect GPA of 4.0. So your GPA is going to be significantly below the average for accepted students even if you bump it up to a 3.78 as you hope to do. As for your SAT scores, your Math is perfect, but your writing is only in the middle of their range, and your reading is at the 25th percentile. That’s based on the 2014 entering class stats, and they are improving each year. So from what you have right now, it is hard to say that your chances would be better than the 15% average admission rate and probably below. Sorry to be a downer. BUT . . .

If you can blow out your ACT with a score of 35 or 36, write great essays, show LOTS of interest, and get terrific recommendations – particularly from your GC, you might just be able to pull this out. Demonstrated interest is very important to Rice.

@wandlmink I’m getting a Rec from my AP Chem teacher, and I was one of the best, if not the best, student in the entire program last year. And my GC is new, but I think he appreciates my ambition and hard work? I’m not taking anymore standardized tests (waiting on October SAT) except for my subject tests in November (retaking math and chem).

@ClarinetDad16 I struggled with personal problems throughout my sophomore year, and my GC that year, my junior year, and my senior year were all completely different. Even if I didn’t have my problems, I would still only be in the top 25%. The first four deciles look something like this: top 6% have 4.0s, top 20% have >3.9, top 30% have >3.8, and top 40% have >3.7. I honestly don’t think I’m a dumb person or an unsuccessful student. I just go to a school much like a real life low-key College Confidential.

Bumping this one last time: got my SAT scores today. 2180(660CR GDI/770M KMS/750W/11E). My highest composite is still 2210 (680CR/800M/730W/10E) but my superscore is now 2240: (690CR/800M/750W/11E). I suck at reading…

bump? Got an 800 SAT 2 Chem today, and another 770 Math 2.

Scores are good. ECs are not as committed but maybe write something about one of them on your essays? The upward trend is better than no upward trend, so it will help out quite a bit. I’d say that your admission chances are solid, depending on how well you shine through your essays.

@ruetherford DECA and Science Olympiad (along with the sports) took up a lot of my time. Our school’s team was only formed two years ago too. The things that happened in my sophomore year forced me to rethink my entire life, so that’s why I don’t appear as committed.

To be completely honest, I think your chance isn’t that high because of your test scores and gpa, but I’d definitely still apply tho because your academic curriculums are solid.
