I visited rice a few months back, and I absolutely LOVED it. It is without a doubt my first choice college. I was just wondering if I'm on track.

Weighted GPA: 4.12
Unweighted: 4.01
(GPA is converted from a 12 pt scale...11.36/12 weighted)

AP Classes:
-Sophomore: AP European History- B+ both semesters, 3 on exam (History isn't exactly my strong point)
-Junior: AP Chem- A, AP Lang- A, AP Psych- A (Plan on getting 4 or 5s on all exams)
-Senior: will take AP Calc BC, AP Bio, AP US History, AP Lit

Class Rank: 14/252 (Top 5%)
I go to a public school, however it is extremely competitive as far as public schools go. My school also gives the option of not sending rank...Which is another question of mine. When applying for rice should I send this rank?

I am still waiting on scores for the ACT and have not yet taken the SAT or SAT II.

Yes.

Your scores are on target and will put you in range to get in (assuming SAT/ACT comes in good). Do you plan of applying ED?

I would like to, but the cost of Rice is a bit concerning…I may apply RD so that I can make a decision knowing what all of my options are financially for all the colleges I apply for. Would applying RD hurt my chances? Also, I’ve heard that Rice tends to give less financial aid to ED applicants because there is less of a need to give incentives. Is that true?

If you are unable to attend due to financial issues, you can terminate the ED contract.Furthermore, Rice give out the same amount of financial aid regardless as they are need blind.

Yes, you look good, but I have a question. How does one get a 4.01 UNweighted with a B+ in a class?

Because my school is on a 12 point scale. To convert 12 point to 4 point, you are supposed to add 1 and divide by 3. If someone gets a B+ (which is a 9) and gets A’s and A+'s (11’s and 12’s) it’s possible to counter the 9 and get above a 4.0.

It does give your GPA a little bit of a boost…I’m not sure why it works out that way, but my GPA wouldn’t be reported on a 4 pt scale, it would be reported out of 12. (and my unweighted GPA on the 12 pt scale is 11.03)
I’m not all that familiar with the 4 pt scale because I have been on the 12pt scale for my entire high school career…but I’m pretty sure it all evens out because our percentage cut offs for getting an A versus an A+ and so on are different.

Thanks for the explanation. It is interesting. At my D’s school even an A+ is a 4.0 unweighted, so you can never get a 4.0 with even one B+. Good Luck!

^^ At Rice, A+'s are 4.33 while A-'s are 3.67. So you can have a B+ and still graduate summa cum laude
