Essay: I think its pretty good. I expressed my interest for RPI well. (candidates choice app)

I’m pretty sure you’ll get in… I’d be surprised if you didn’t.

Thanks for ur post! Do u think the 28 on my act is bad?

Well it depends on the subscores… If your math and science scores are higher than a 29, then you’re fine. :)

Really?? Good i got a 30 on both math and science. Do u go to RPI are u planning to?

30’s on science and math? Don’t worry about it then. :)

And no, I don’t, but I do plan on applying, and I literally live a half hour away from RPI. I also have several friends who go there, so I know a decent amount of info about it. :)

Oh, and do you know what your class rank is?

Thanks! I hope u get in as well. And my school doesn’t rank. It’s really small and competitive. (ranked 11th in the nation by newsweek)

No problem! And good luck to you as well. I’m sure you’ll get in. :)

Jane, I’m an RPI alum and stay in contact with the school regularly. Here’s the scoop.

Your GPA is good to go of course.

The 28 ACT could be a problem. The avg ACT for the class of 2014 was exactly 28. The numbers for the class of 2015 have not been released yet but you can assume that the average will be higher. They had 8% more apps for the class of 2015.

So to have an average to below average ACT for a school with a 38% acceptance rate is not the strongest position. If you take it again a 31-32 should really set you up nicely.

As it stands now I could see you getting in but I could also see you being rejected. Just being realistic on your chances.

Best of Luck and I hope you get into this great university.

You stand a much better chance at any school doing ED since it is a binding decision.

With a 5 on calc BC, you should have a higher ACT math score as well as on SAT II. Have you figured any inconsistency in your performance in standardized tests?

Great chance, I’d say almost sure bet. Your scores aren’t fantastic, but they’re definitely good enough, RPI isn’t that selective. Plus you’ve got 2 5’s on AP calc tests. Also you’re a girl. Good luck, RPI is a very nice school.

thanks so much for all of your opinions.
@rico2, i was also worried about my act score. I’m going to take it again in September so it might go up. I’m also going to retake my SAT 2 for math!
I don’t know why, but I always seem to run out of time for my ACT and SAT. Any advice? Maybe it’s because I only took them once.
I reallyyy want to get in!

Also, how is the financial aid for RPI? Are US Permanent Residents allowed to get federal aid as well? or are they classified as International students?

Oh and does applying with the candidate choice app make a difference?

Jane, here is the most recent data from collegedata.com (Class of 2013) so you can assess ED vs. Regular Decision and impact of male vs. female admit rate. Again, RPI has gotten more competitive in the two years since then so assume these admit rates will be a little lower now.

PROFILE OF FALL 2009 ADMISSIONOverall Admission Rate 43% of 12,350 applicants were admitted
Women 45% of 3,775 applicants were admitted
Men 42% of 8,575 applicants were admitted
Students Enrolled 1,337 (25%) of 5,291 admitted students enrolled
Women 360 (21%) of 1,695 admitted students enrolled
Men 977 (27%) of 3,596 admitted students enrolled
Early Decision Admission Rate 39% of 1268 applicants were admitted
Early Action Admission Rate
Students Offered Wait List 3,799
Students Accepting Wait List Position 276
Students Admitted From Wait List 186

You may want to post questions about financial aid in the RPI forum as current students will have the best perspective on the aid packages.

WOW it seems like less ppl get in from early decision. ***. now im officially screwed. well im still going to apply early because i want to know by december.

Don’t worry too much! It’s still 39 percent, which is pretty high… I wouldn’t worry if I were you.

You still have great shot and I think you will make it. Just saying its not an automatic admit.

haha I just need to do well on those tests!! I’m gonna study for the ACT now! Thanks soo much! :)

If you’re a girl, you will get in! But you’re incredibly well qualified no matter what! Good luck!
