Respectfully, I don’t think Virginia Tech is a ‘Shoo-in’ for anyone OSS (or in state for that matter). Virginia schools admit an approximate 70/30 IS/OOS split. Their applications aren’t even looked at together. It makes it much harder to get in from OOS.

This was a recent post from a waitlisted instate student on the VATech Forum:
GPA: 3.6
ACT: 33
SAT: 2020
6 APS, 1 DE, 4 Honors
4 Years Varsity Soccer

You do not know what other EC’s were not listed, if the AP’s were in core classes, how much they were weighted, etc. It is impossible to tell with student posted statistics what the adcoms are really seeing. GPAs are generally recalculated because High Schools weight on such different systems. They have to level out grade inflation. Often they only look at core classes so your ‘filler classes’ are no longer there to bump up that C you may have gotten in Chem your Jr. year.

Srenner421 may be a good candidate for admission and count VT among their target schools, however it would be unwise to consider it a safety. Not because he doesn’t have great stats and a great application portfolio, but because the competition, especially for OOS, is rising each year.

Best of luck to all rising Sr’s!! :)

What were your AP scores?

I think you’d have a good shot at all of these schools with a higher SAT score. Your ACT score is about the same as your SAT score, so I would just go for the SAT again. You could probably get over 2000 with some studying.

I’d say that you have the best shot at VT, but Georgia Tech can be difficult because you’re out of state. If you can bring up your SAT score, I think you’d have a good shot at RPI as well.

Thanks. I got a 4 on World history,Psychology, and Environmental. In two weeks im taking Chemistry, American, and English and im pretty sure ill pass all of them but im not sure what ill get. I am taking five AP’s next year.

I always study enough to make sure i pass my AP’s so im definetly sure ill pass all of them…except stats I hear thats a weird one.

Oh, Also I am going to be Drum Major next year so that proabably helps too…

I also felt like i did poorly and freaked out on the SAt so i think if i study and take it again ill do much better.

Ga tech is my number 1 choice. It’s extremely bugging me because I can’t judge if I have a chance at getting in because of the out of state factor.

Yeah, your SAT’s are a bit low, but for V-Tech, you are a shoo-in. Don’t listen to the other guy; if you are telling the truth with your scores, gpa, and EC’s, then I’m pretty sure you’ll be fine at V-Tech. I’ve seen TONS of my senior friends at my school in PA (I’m a junior) apply to vtech, and not one of them got denied. They were all around your level or lower, and most didn;t have nearly as many EC’s as you did. Now for G-Tech. Georgia is tricky. They are a GREAT engineering school. However, they admit around 68% of instaters, and according to a lady I emailed at admissions at G-Tech, they let in about 45% of out of staters. 45% for out of staters is HUGE for a school of that caliber. Truth be told, G-tech isn’t really all that hard to get into. Your SAT is only just below the average, and you’re solid everywhere else. I would give you a good shot for an out of stater.

PS: being asian american will hurt you in these two schools due to affirmative action, as they get tons of asians who apply, and essentially, you’re competing with that “nerdy asian kid” with the 4.0 and 2400. I’m asian and I’m applying there next year. Good luck!

Oh, and I know that RPI is pretty big on SAT’s (my dad has friends who are very involved there). RPI’s pretty much the definition of a nerd school, so they are very big on GPA and SAT and less concerned with EC’s. Take the SAT’s again, and shoot for a higher school. Otherwise, you’re set

What is the breakdown on your SAT?

Your EC’s look good, and your class selection looks good, so neither of those should be a problem.

A 3.70 is the low end of acceptable for Tech UW. In the 3.6’s and you’re in trouble (average admitted is over 3.9 UW, but based on what I’ve seen, 3.75+ would be a comfortable range). So if you hit your target of 3.8, your GPA would be fine.

What really hurts is the 1250/1900. Those are both very low for Tech. The average admitted last year had a 2070 SAT (not that Tech admits based on a combined score, but just to give you an idea). To be competitive, you need your Math score over 700 and your CR over 650.

With a 3.70/1900, I’d say you’re a pretty good reach. If you get is to 3.80/1900, I’d say slight reach. If you can get the SAT up and improve the stats to 3.80/2050+, I’d say match.

Head over to the GT forum. There was a 2350 SAT, 3.95 UWGPA flat out rejected (and a few others with very impressive stats in that range). I’m not saying that’s typical, but it happens for various reasons: terrible essay, incomplete application, international applicant from a competitive country, poor references, etc. I wouldn’t try to draw conclusions from a sample size of one.
