I know I may be over reacting, but after the past few days I have become increasingly paranoid about my chances of getting into SJSU. I recently talked to a few friends who are attending and according to them, because of my choice in major (Mechanical Engineering), it may be harder for me to be accepted. I am currently a senior in High School and San Jose State is probably one of my top choice because it is close to home where I can support my family. What do you guys think my chances are?
Cumulative 3.47 G.P.A.
Rank 147/807
ACT Composite: 27
I plan to retake the SAT in October but my previous scores were
Reading: 510
Math: 540
Writing: 580
I have also been in the AVID program since freshman year and I am currently in AVID Leadership for senior year.

I think you should be able to get in. Try to raise your ACT/SAT if you can

SJSU: safety

You should also apply to UCR, UCM, CSUEB.

Really? Would majoring in mechanical engineering effect my chances of being admitted in any way? I heard it had something to do with that certain major being extremely popular.

The difference between impacted and non-impacted majors is not that big. Admissions to SJSU is entirely numbers based, and your stats are certainly good enough to be admitted.

SJSU: Low match

Might want UCSC (or even UCSB) if you can afford to aim higher…
