chances for Scholarship?

Public High School in SW Chicago Burbs
4.86 GPA
33 ACT
Ranked 6/638 (top 1%)
Great Essays & Good EC's

What are my chances for a Trustee/Presidential Scholarship?

Quite good. If you applied this year, you'll found out soon if you got one. Best of luck.

yup, you should have an acceptance letter fairly soon.

is your school on a 6 point or 5 point ap weight scale?

what about me? i have a 33 act and a 4.0 UW for 9th and 10th, 4.4 for this year (all As, 3 weighted classes...im a junior rhp kid). oh and strong extra curriculars/reccomendations, fairly decent essays... public school, doesnt rank.
scholarship?

what's your overall gpa?

Most admitted RHP kids get a scholarship, and your stats look pretty good, so you probably will.

5 point GPA scale for AP classes

yeah you're good

what does RHP mean

resident honors program. it's for extremely talented juniors in the area around USC to apply as juniors and skip their senior year.

gpa-- at my school freshmen and sophomores are not allowed to take AP classes, and there are no available honors classes. so i have (4.0+4.0+4.43)/3=4.14 weighted. 4.0 uw all years.

when i had my interview the director of rhp told me that how it generally worked out for ACT was: 32 to be considered for rhp, 33 to get in to rhp, and 34+ for trustee or presidential. of course, there are other factors....

is the 34 for trustee or presidential for all applicants or just for RHP? because i have a 32 and i really want a scholarship.

the qualifications for merit scholarships would be the same for all students since the scholarship program is in no way specific to rhp.

what is your SAT I score? if its higher than a 32 equivalent- woo!

there is also dean's scholarship of course.

and that 2-second run down was just based on test scores, obviously they look at a bunch of different criteria for ppl considered for the biggies.

does state of residency come into play when considering scholarships? like are certain amounts taken from each state, or is california heavily awarded as i assume it is?

34 seems really high because the scholarship info says that trustee and presidential candidates are in the top 1-2% of SAT and ACT nationally, and a 32 is still in the top 1% nationally (my ACT is higher).

i definitely hope that you're right, blue..

of the current freshman class, 361 received presidential scholarships, and about 100 received trustee. that's not including the students who received those scholarships but didn't attend. so yeah, a 34 cutoff seems extremely high, and besides, usc is good about focusing on the applicant's overall image. what'd you score socks?

I'll take the middle ground. I would say 33 is a more likely figure.

Top 1% is probably a lot more common, but they include the 2% because there are some compelling candidates with the lower SAT's. Also take a look at this post by an admissions officer at a selective institution. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=3452914&postcount=123

The important part is:

I've noticed that when a student takes both the SAT and the ACT, they usually have a stronger score on the ACT than on the SAT...so perhaps that 32 is even less-special now than it was before?

...so that may translate to less respect for the ACT. In other words, a top 1% nationally in the ACT wouldn't be equivalent to top 1% for the SAT.

Anywhoo, I think it's great that you are so passionate, but at the same time your test scores are on the lower end to receive a scholarship, particularly since it's getting more competitive every year. Good luck though.

There's no strict cut-off per se, just sort of an unofficial one.

Also I think a lot more candidates submit (and are evaluated by) the SAT. As I said above, ACT just may garner less respect.
