Chances for several schools... Can I get in anywhere good?

My background and the experiences I have endured are pretty unique and separate my from 99% of applicants to college.

Mom had schizophrenia which caused obviously distressing behavior at home. Kept me out of elementary school at times because of delusions, afraid "they" would kill me.

Low income family, father immigrant and first generation college student. Father's business went bankrupt and I had to work over 20 hours per week to help support my family. Go to school and live in a very affluent community though.

Missed 1 month of school during freshman year due to a case of acute bronchitis. Grades dropped to a C/B average that year which hurt my class rank and overall GPA.

LARGE upward trend per year in grades.
GPAs 9th-2.44 10-3.5 11-3.9 unweighted 4.44 weighted
Overall- 3.4 unweighted, 3.62 weighted
SAT I- 1880 (660CR, 540M, 680W)
SAT II- 800 US History, 560 Biology-E
3 AP courses- All A's
1 undergraduate course at UCLA- A
Class Rank- Only about top 35% because of freshman grades, very competitive school that sends students to Princeton, Stanford, etc every year

Chances?
UCLA

All other UCs except Merced, Riverside
Georgetown
Boston University
Brandeis
Rochester
Syracuse
American

I'm also looking for suggestions for any other schools out there I should be looking at!

if ur in state

UCLA reach
UC Berkeley reach
UC San Diego match
All other UCs except Merced, Riverside match
Georgetown reach
Boston University match
Brandeis match
Rochester high match
Syracuse match
American match

^^^I have no idea where people come up with these odds. Please dont give out bum information, its not fair to the poster. If you dont know, simply dont post odds. I saw this poster above posting bogus chances for other people for the UC's. UCSD's average admit stats are a 4.04 GPA and 1940 SAT. A 3.62 and a 1880 would put UCSD as a reach. UCLA/UCB are a large reach. UCI/UCSB/UCD would be a match. Trying to say that UCSD has the same odds (match) with average admit stats of 4.04 and 1940 sat as say davis with 3.84 and 1800 is ridiculous.

Here are the averages for admits to UC campuses. Karan89, please check these stats before continuing to post bogus chances.

UCB/UCLA: Large Reach (in state)
UCSD: Reach (in state)
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Match (in state)
American: Safe Match
Syracuse: Safe Match
Georgetown: Large Reach
Boston University: Match

I strongly recommend you to retake the SATs! These scores really hurt you but your ECs are very strong in my opinion, given the circumstances!

I guess they application-essays are very important in this case! You could (or even should) mention the obstacles you had to deal with:
Don't beg for pity but show the admission officers how the hardship you had to suffer strengthened you et cetera!

All the best!

i applied in my junior year with a 1770 (v540 m670 w560) sat II 1480, (i had a GPA of 5 out of 5 that year), and i got into UCLA, and im an international, I GOT IN WITH ALL THOSE ODDS AGAINST ME.

so why on earth would a college like UCSD be a reach for someone with an 1880 ????

WHY ??
WHY ?????????? why are ppl so into these numbers ?????

LOL!!! Uchris, except for one school we have the same predictions hahahahahahhaa. plus, im not an expert. ucsd is not a ucb/ucla, hence i classify it with the rest.

Are UCLA and UC Berkeley still a reach when I'm low income, first generation, overcome personal circumstances etc?

For example, under the UCSD point system https://tritonlink.ucsd.edu/portal/site/prospective-students/menuitem.24134797e5e2fd95a0b86710514b01ca?storyID=20690#selection

I notice that I would have besides the GPA and SAT scores that I posted:

40 or more courses: 500 pts
Less than federal TRIO low-income cut-offs: 300 pts
300 pts for one or more major leadership roles, (President. or VP of class or school, Editor-in-Chief, Eagle Scout, Girl Scout Gold Award)
Special talents, achievements and awards 300 pts
Volunteer/community service: 200+ total hours: 300 pts.
Special circumstances and/or personal challenges 500 pts

That is an additional 2200 points! My UC GPA weighted is a 4.0 as well.

ur sat is weak, thats whats really hurting u for them.

Your situation would be in a "separate pile" of applications. That what a lady from Berkeley told us about. If you have special circumstances, they have a different committee look at your application, and that will boost your chances greatly. Good luck.

Thanks IhDRpage06.

I would hate to rely on "special circumstances" etc to get me into college, but do you think that it may lead to me being accepted?

My SAT is weak and that score was combined. Single sitting is a 1830...

I know people that got in with 500s across the board tho and you hear of those people. Anyone else?

Harding292:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Match
UCSC: Safe Match

https://tritonlink.ucsd.edu/portal/site/prospective-students/menuitem.24134797e5e2fd95a0b86710514b01ca?storyID=20690#selection

Using all of those factors combined, my chances are still a large reach for those schools?

Thanks for all the help btw

Thanks flopsy
