Speech and Debate

Again, so far, all A's, except 1 A- in Algebra II (92.9!) My schedule is the most demanding the school offers. I will have taken all of the honors/AP classes offered at my school once I am done.

ECs:
Speech and Debate (Vice Captain Junior year, Captain Senior Year. Numerous awards, including many firsts at statewide tourneys. Been to 5 weeks of debate camp so far. Will be competitive on the national "TOC" circuit. Ive broken at tournaments like the Glenbrooks and New Trier. Went to nats sophomore year, going again this year. Over 1300 NFL points. 2nd at state in Policy Debate, 4th in extemp, 3rd in prose reading. I also taught a debate course at the local middle school. My essays will probably revolve around debate. I also spent 7 weeks at the University of Michigan for debate camp last summer.)
Model United Nations
Math Honor Society (President)
National Honor Society
Academic Challenge (Regional, televised, brain bowl competition. We were champions this year)
Tennis
Employed at School's Student Tutor Center

Awards:
National Merit Semifinalist (projected)
NFL Academic All-American
Again, over 30 specific debate awards

Recs:
Should be above average. One is from my AP Comp teacher, who gave me student of the year and constantly encouraged me to publish my writing. The other is from my AP Gov teacher and I was a pretty strong/active student in his class. Plus, government is just kinda my thing.

I am also applying to:
Harvard
Stanford (EA)
Vanderbilt
Emory
Dartmouth
Princeton
Whitman
Williams
and some safeties

Yeah, that’s real ’ neato.

hey, go easy on the guy, after all, government is just kinda his thing, and he went to nats his sophomore year.

but that being said

an A-?!

get outta here with your sub 4 GPA.

i have no patience for such mediocrity.

You are a great candidate.
I can’t imagine who they’d take if not you…unless they think you’re not really interested.

do you debate for mercer island?

Im confused. Oh and “superkewlguy” and “realcooldude” something tells me you are the same person.

No, I don’t debate for mercer.

Honestly, I agree with every post before me.
You have a really good chance, but you’re a jerk.
And by the by, I go to a school whose debate team is very competitive on the TOC circuit and I have many friends in the program. A lot of them from the past few years, although they were part of arguably the most successful debate program ever, were rejected or deferred from some of the colleges on your list–particularly Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton. These kids live for debate… it’s almost all they think about. They go to debate camp for five weeks just like you, but they do it every summer. Don’t rely on debate to get you into a school, especially when the real heavyweights at the TOC can’t even do it.

^^ very true negopop. best debaters (with only a few exceptions) don’t generally go to best schools. probably come off as arrogant. you can get away with it if you’re top in nation, but it shows in your app.

I can see that. But a lot of those kids still went to very good schools. Our top team from two years ago went to Harvard and Yale. Last year we had some go to Yale, Penn, and Dartmouth (x2). This year our debaters seem a little less ambitious. They’re looking at NU, Tufts, UT-Austin, Emory, etc. Still very good schools, but Emory admissions is no Harvard admissions. And a lot of the top competitors (e.g. one of the Dartmouth-ers from last year) apply to the higher Ivies and still don’t get in.

However, this may be skewed because, on average, my school sends ~10% of the graduating class to Ivies and ~25% to Top 25 USNWR schools.

My intent is not to come off as an arrogant jerk. True, us debates can be a bit pretentious, but I didnt write the adcoms saying “I’m a badass debate. You’re total idiots if you dont let me in.” Unlike you, neogop, I do not coe from a school with a very established nation circuit “toc” history. Last year we qualled a team to the toc in policy for the first time in our state’s recent history. I have worked my ass off to get where I am. I have not had coaching and travel money handed to me on a silver platter like some debate schools. For the most part, our squad is on our own.

As for debaters not getting in to good schools, I think that might reflect how they put so much in to debate and dont balance their school work. It’s certainly not uncommon for the best debaters in the nation to have a 2.0 GPA.

Yeah, but posting originally was what was jerky. Clearly, you’re qualified, but there’s no reason for you to post here other than for some sort of self-gratification. We’re not admissions officers, we’re just people that want to go/are going to Georgetown. It’s not like you didn’t know what everyone would say.

it’s getting really stuffy here. guys, relax.

true dat, thekingsofcrunk. this guy’s gotta get real.

but if you ask me, I say defer. Nothing kills an application like an A- in algebra.

your post contradicts itself…

"My intent is not to come off as an arrogant jerk. I didnt write the adcoms saying “I’m a badass debate.”

“I have worked my ass off to get where I am. I have not had coaching and travel money handed to me on a silver platter like some debate schools. For the most part, our squad is on our own.”

howd you make it to nationals?

i don’t really see a purpose in posting a “chance me” thread unless you sense a weakness in some part of your application, but clearly, you seem pretty pleased with it on the whole.

^^^ Agreed don’t post a thread to boost your confidence; You know you’ll get in… In fact, people that post threads that know the answers are the ones least likely to succeed when they get to their dream school =) Have a Good Day.

^ hahaha SO TRUE! so tired of jerks posting chance me’s just for an ego boost

On paper, and in comparison to my classmates, you’re pretty much what they look for in the SFS. Though I don’t have an actual inside info from the office, if there’s any advice I’d give you it would be to expand beyond your focus on rather academic pursuits- maybe give the arts, sports, or volunteering a try. Also, be prepared to dominate the interview with passion and likability- it really can make the difference here.

Best,

SFS 2013

3.993 GPA? I think you can just round that to a 4.0… im not sure though, i know this one guy, and lemme tell you, that .007 can really come back to haunt you. yea 007, but not like james bond, because he wouldn’t have got an A-

Ummm who’s being the jerk here? Last time I look to any of you guys for advice…
