If you had a higher test score and low GPA it would make you stick out for a rigorous high school.

Give SMU a shot. You would be a URM there, and they don’t have that many kids from CA. They admit a lot of kids from my daughter’s rigorous private school in TX. Some have fairly low ACTs and GPAs. The school is well known to SMU and about 1/3 of the class applies. Have you demonstrated interest? Get your cousin to write a letter.

Actually California though not the majority has a good portion of its class from California. Roughly 15% or so

Have you visited either school? SMU likes applicants to visit and demonstrate interest. If you cant go in person try a phone interview with admissions. I would say your stats are a bit low for smu but if you have good extracurriculars or other non school activites that may give you a boost.
