Do you think that I can get at least some merit money if I apply (I am OOS)?

Does UM even superscore the SAT?

definitely. i had a 3.6 uw, no APs, 2110 (1400) SAT, no extracurriculars except working and i got the least amount of scholarship. you will get the $3000-$5000 a year if not a chance at the full ride

Yes, UM superscores the SAT. We were at an information session last week, and the admissions rep specifically said they do :)

We're hopeful for OOS merit money too, with similar stats as yours.

get a higher SAT score. scholarship money is all about the SAT score.

MY S has a 1450 / 2230, 4.5(w), 15 of 575, we are OOS, from NJ. My S will likely be applying in the fall, probably for business. Any idea how UMd decides on any merit $$ awards,,, assuming they still do ( I know some schools are cutting back a bit ) ? Thanks. MBJ

Thanks, and hinmanCEO, how much higher of a SAT (if that is really important)

try to get every subscore to 750. i know that sounds like saying get a perfect sat score, but if you want to be considered for a full ride or presidential, getting 750+'s is good.

Yeah, the cut-offs between Dean's, Presidential, and full-ride were REALLY close, so it is tough to gauge which one you would get, but I suspect you'll get some money. They seemed pretty strictly based on GPA/class rank and SAT scores (even SAT II scores to some extent). From our school we had kids who got into Ivy League schools getting only Dean's and full-rides being handed out seemingly at random. Things were a bit looser on OOS kids; they tended to get more money with lower stats. Anyway, good luck :).

hmm another question ---> could I get into the Bioengineering program, maybe even with money, or does my SAT score take that out of the realm of possibility?

i got into an IVY, the best one in fact for engineering, Cornell. but only got dean's.. the one time $1.5k..

lame.

however, in my school 5 people got full rides ranging from 3.7/1420 to 3.94/1490ish. so it isn't all about the gpay and sat scores. i had a 3.92/1350 and got a full ride. it is really random. many 3.9s got at least one form of a scholarship. btw. the people with full rides were 2 asians, 2 hispanics, and 1 white person. 3 males and 2 females.

first of all, i just want to say that it's interesting that some one else got into cornell but turned them down, because i did that.

but that's not the point of my post. im sure you'll get some sort of scholarship from the university as a whole, but if engineering is what you're looking for, the engineering school has a scholarship also that you can apply to once you've gotten in. i only got president's scholarship (8000), but with the engineering scholarship (12000), almost all of my tuition is paid! so maybe you can do the same. though fyi, you do need to keep a 3.5 to keep the scholarship (which i don't know if i can do).

congrats ben and jerry's! haha im still sorta bitter about getting the $1,5k deans. $1k from clark school and turning down cornell. but then again, I am as Asian-male in engineering with a 1380. So I get no love thanks to affirmative action. but if you are black or Hispanic, those scholarships fly to you, and even more come if you wanna major in engineering.

thanks for the input, and another general question, has anyone tried using the Academic Common Market?

what the heck is that? 0__o if that when you tell them you got more $$$ from another school?

An agreement between the "southern" states in which a student can enroll in a major at a participating state institution for instate tuition if their own state institution does not offer that particular major.

So what are my chances for $?

GPA 4.0/4.57
1550/1600....2200/2400

1 in class of 500

7 APs all 5s and one 4 (taking another 5 AP classes senior yr.)
4 seasons captain of running teams

it's SO hard to tell, nathansub. personally, i don't even like trying to guess people's chances for admission because it can be so random. the way they give out scholarship $ is (seemingly) much more random. you do have good stats (merit scholarships aren't going to take into account your athletic history or anything besides your numbers), so i'd think you'd get SOMETHING. but really, any answer you get (including mine) should be taken with a grain of salt.

Chance me too haha:

Rising instate male senior, white
GPA 3.94/4.6
SAT 1310...1900
HHMI/NIH Internship
200 hrs community service so far

smoooott sometihng small liek $1.5k total... nathansubs get like presidential?
