Chances for St. Lawrence University?

Note: Please forgive for putting this in the "Parents" section of the forum. This thread was literally being passed over on the "Chances" section for the past few days.

Applied to St. Lawrence. This is not the only school I've applied to. I've been accepted to a few through EA, and have already sent in my applications for my safeties (CUNY and SUNY).

St. Lawrence University School Link.

Why I'm applying: It's a liberal arts college, with close-knit social and learning communities. I've been in this type of school setting since elementary school. I kid you not my 8th grade class was literally 17 people, and my senior class is of about 100-120 students, which is the largest class my parochial school has had.

Stats:
Race: Black
Ethnicity: American born, Haitian background.
Hopefully majoring in: Biology

SATs (highest scores): 630 CR, 470 M (I know, I know), 500 W. ACT: Scores not available yet.

Class Rank: 12/120 (from 06/2010, after the marking period ended in Nov., I think it's higher... it better be... hopefully)

GPA: 91 unweighted. On a 4.0 scale: 3.7

ECs: Chapter VP for Junior Statesmen of America (nationally student-run political organization);
Homeroom Rep. for Student Gov't.;
Student at SUNY Downstate Medical Center taking college-level general anatomy and physiology classes;
Internship with the Geriatrics Psychology center at Downstate socializing with an Alzheimer's patient;
National Honor Society.

APs: U.S. History, Literature (junior year), Language (senior year). APs have recently been offered in my school about 5-8 years ago, from my knowledge, and I've taken all that my school currently offers.

Other college-level classes: Pre-Calc (with credits received from school partnership with St. John's University, along with AP Language); *Student at SUNY Downstate Medical Center taking college-level general anatomy and physiology classes.

*Note: I wrote about the SUNY class twice, because it's an after school activity, but we do have tests and transcripts.

Other information: I've already confirmed an interview for St. Lawrence for January 16th.

Please be honest (shouldn't have to worry about that here), but provide constructive criticism.

My s looked at SLU and my brother attended. It is a real gem of a school but I think the locale turns some people off (quite cold and dark in winter!) I think that the interview is going to be key for you, they are looking for all kinds of diversity so that should work in your favor.I guess you don’t have a chance to retake the sat to up that math score huh? If you are premed (I’m assuming) that is going to present a challenge. Be upfront and present yourself as a unique individual (which I’m sure you are!) I bet they will take a chance on you. Good luck!

Thank you! =)

I’m from New York City, so the crack weather won’t bother me that much. It’s so cold to the point of where I literally spend 10 minutes layering up before walking my dog out in 20 degress +/- weather. Twice a day. Everyday… Now the snow, I’m still looking at combative methods. Oh, boy…

Diversity is one of the reasons why I’m applying there. My AP Language teacher’s husband went there, and she told me they were especially impressed with her husband coming from an urban area (NYC).

I took the ACT as a last effort to up any scores and to finally rid myself of the SAT, and hopefully my composite score is above 25.

Once again, thank you!

SLU is a terrific place. I agree with prior respondent that an interview is important. Note that SLU does not require standardized test score so give thought before submitting scores that might hurt your chances. Other than your standardize scores you have a good resume. if you play a sport or two that is a plus as it is sporty school. My son is applying there. He interviewed and also did an overnight. Loves it. Found the students warm and friendly. He is white but comes from a diverse school (majority black and Hispanic) in the South. Good luck.

I think you are definitely what SLU is looking for! My student had a great 4 years there.

@Kiltdad: Thank you! I was aware that SLU was SAT/ACT optional after I applied. sheepish grin But I did read a interview from the Dean of SLU that had a applicant who was valedictorian of his HS class, high GPA, had a CR + M SAT score of 778 (+/-). But they still admitted the student because his SATs proved to be insignificant after they reviewed his application again.

Also, I suck at sports, lol. I use my brain more than I do my limbs for sports. If dogwalking and trudging in crack weather for mass transit, I’d be a shoo-in. Hah! Their dance team looks pretty good, though.

@SLUMOM: Thank you! =) Judging from your username and response, do you have any tips for a SLU hopeful?

I attended Clarkson College, in the Potsdam not far from SLU. Loved the small town school experience and survived the cold. But be forwarned that it will be MUCH colder than NYC.

I say that having grown up in Kingston/Poughkeepsie (usually a little colder than NYC)… and knowing Potsdam was MUCH colder. Less of that cold/damp weather I dislike (40 degrees and raining to me is the worst!). But the North Country had more below-zero weather than I had ancipated. Just continue dressing in layers (including some warm boots) and you’ll be fine ;)

Good luck Rosary!

My son is also an SLU applicant.

Second Colorado Mom re the cold. We live in the Cap. district and it’s considered balmy compared to Canton.

@colorado_mom: Thank you! Wow, and I thought walking in 3 feet of snow for 5 minutes with my dog was bad. Yeesh! stocks up on cheap layers

@emilybee: Thank you! And Good Luck to your son, as well!

Lol emilybee; Balmy Albany!!!
