Chances for Stanford, CMU, UCB, and UMich

Now that all of my test scores came out, it's time to see what my stats are capable of. I'm applying to the schools early action (unless they don't have the option).

Immigrated from Romania when I was young, fluent in English as well.

Unweighted GPA: 4.0

Class Rank: 1/502

ACT: 35 (and 34 before)
English 34 (35 super); Math 35; Reading: 34; Science: 36

SAT: 2200
Reading: 670; Math: 800; Writing: 730
(Yeah I had a bad time with that reading, not sure why.)

SAT Subject Tests:
Chemistry: 800
Math II: 800

APs:
World History: 5
Calculus BC: 5
Biology: 5
Microeconomics: 5
Macroeconomics: 5
Computer Science: 5
Statistics: 5
Chemistry: 5
Psychology: will take senior year
Environmental Science: will take senior year

Speaking of senior year, I am also dual enrolling in Calc 3 at a community college, and I'm taking 2 "honors" courses (that doesn't mean much to me).

Extra-curriculars:
Taekwondo, 2nd Dan, 8+ years
National Honor Society
Varsity Quiz Bowl
Math/Science Olympiad, and Science Bowl

Work Experience:
Instruct Taekwondo class at least once a week (2010 -)
Intern at a local corporation, use a bit of SQL, HTML and JavaScript among other tasks (June 2013 -)

Recommendations from my AP Java and AP Chem teachers. Essays have been started, should be pretty solid, to say the least.

Aside from the named schools, which others should I also look into? I am interested in computer science and business.

Your test scores/academics in general are fantastic, but your ecs are lacking (no sports) and also you have no major awards to make up for a lack if ecs/sports. You still have a fairly good chance.

The issue with ACT is that schools tend not to superscore it as much, not to say your score isn’t good regardless. Considering your ACT, you wouldn’t have to but you could retake the SAT I’s to bring up the score a bit. It’d be nice to have a definitive senior schedule to see the rigor of your final year. Overall, I think your chances at most of the schools mentioned are good. Stanford’s obviously a crapshoot, but I think you have a higher chance than most in getting in. You just need to show you’re down-to-earth in the essays and those will be fine.

As ksharm01 said, your ECs are lacking a bit, though that’s also because you haven’t mentioned any leadership roles(assuming you have any). I agree that you need some sort of award to bring up your chances or provide leadership roles. However, I disagree that you don’t have a sport. Taekwondo will definitely count and it shows you have commitment.

As far as other schools, MIT has the best computer science program in the US and the 2nd best business program. UPenn has the best business program. I’m sure you know about them, but they weren’t mentioned and wasn’t sure if you had them on your radar. Harvey Mudd College is a very good undergraduate school for the sciences in general. Georgia Tech for CompSci.

Good luck

You really don’t need to retake SAT. Your ACT score will trump your weakness in SAT if any. You should be a match for UMich and UCB. For Stanford and CMU, you may need some luck.

InsertUserHere,

Sorry if it wasn’t clear, the 35 wasn’t superscored. It was 34/35/34/36. Yeah I’m planning on never taking the SAT again. I really can’t stand their vocabulary questions.
Down to earth- pretty much just show my true personality? I’m writing them “informally”, using colorful and personable language. I’m assuming that’s what it means.

What exactly are considered “leadership roles”? Captain of a club? And yes I’m going to try to emphasize TKD in place of a normal school sport.

Thanks!

Assuming you’re applying to CMU’s CS school and that you are male (but even if you weren’t), it will be all up to chance, as will Stanford. You’ve done all that you can; you just need some luck with admissions.

So at this point I guess it’s just a flip of a coin, then…

I don’t think you have to worry about Michigan or UCB.

^ Yeah, I’m confident in both. I’m just worried about costs of UCB, probably wouldn’t be worth it. (In-state for Michigan)

Great GPA/class rank and great ap scores (although these matter a little less). Great SAT II scores and solid SAT I/ ACT scores.

Like other posters have said, the main Achilles heel in your application is your lack of EC’s. An EC that you won a major award/ recognition would help you extremely.

I put UCB and Stanford at reaches, and the other two as high matches/safeties.

By the way, could you chance me back? I would really appreciate it!

Chances for HYPSM, Ivies? Will Chance Back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1523385-chances-hypsm-ivies-will-chance-back-d.html</a></p>

oh, and is your user name from the Girl’s Generation song? just wondering :D

Downside of that is I haven’t really reached out too far to get “awards”. My school doesn’t present anything to us, nor is there much to do locally. That and I was pretty lazy. Although, would national merit semi-finalist count for anything?

Yup, it is!

SNSD FTWWWWWWWWW!

Hmmm, I think I’m going to be a semi-finalist too, and I think it definitely helps. At the end of it all, it is only based on the PSAT, though, and the PSAT only predicts the SAT, so I don’t think it will be anything more than a nice ornament.

And I’m sorry to hear that your school does not offer you a lot of awards  I had a similar problem so I looked for online competitions. Oh well, you still have a very tangible chance. Good luck! (and jessica = best in SNSD lol!)

Oh, huh, online competitions would have been a smart idea. Yeah, I don’t think my school even has an “honor roll”, at least not that I’ve heard of.

Sorry, you’re talking to a Taeyeon fan here! But thanks!
