Chances for Texas A&M, UT Austin, etc?

Hi! I'm a very stressed-out, rising junior. Although I'm on my summer vacation right now, I'm really worried and actually looking out for some colleges/universities that I want to go to. I'm currently looking at UT @ Austin, Texas A&M, and some SUNY schools as well as some other OOS engineering schools. I'm really worried because last semester (sophomore year), I took honors chemistry as well as honors spanish III, which were both really hard courses (I got a C in honors spanish and a D (74) in honors chem). :( I go to a really rigorous high school, one of the most challenging in Texas actually. My class has a total of about 224 students and dropping. I know Texas has a really screwed up rule concerning top 7% so I'm just wondering what my chances are. My unweighted GPA right now is a 3.3 overall, weighted being a 3.75 overall. I think I have pretty good EC's but I really don't know. Are there any other good OOS engineering schools? What advice can you give me? What GPA is good/bad? Thanks!

btw UT AUSTIN is my dream school. I definitely know that I'm not in the top 7% but is there anything else I can do to be admitted?! :(

Consider the CAP program. If you are unfamiliar that is where you attend a sister schoot of UT (UTSA, UT Arlington etc.) your freshman year and if you take at least 30 hours and maintain a GPA > 3.8 (I think) then you will be automatically accepted. I did that and just this past May I graduated from UT Austin. I had similar grades in high school but I was still able to get in eventually and it was the greatest experience ever! You should definitely consider it.

Or shoot for academic auto admit at TAMU which is top 25% & SAT 1300 M + CR with 600+ in each section.

Hi,

@Schneckner, are the campuses just as nice as on the CAP schools as UT Austin is? Also, how is the environment?

@JAMCAFE, I have no idea what my ranking is of right now, but I don’t think I’m in the top 25% of my class either… Maybe top 30-40% is likely. Is there any other way?

Does UT Austin/TAMU look at the ranking of your school? I go to a top school in the Houston area (DeBakey High School) and is consistently ranked as one of the best in nation by US News. I should have gone to a crappy school and just ranked easily in that case, which I hope isn’t… :(

Thanks for all your replies by the way!

The other way is to get really high SAT or ACT scores and ace holistic admissions.

Lots of schools are good for engineering but can they better deal than instate at UT or TAMU?

If you have the stats you can check out University of Alabama for full ride and ABET accredited.

@JAMCAFE, thanks! What would you consider a good score for SAT for the holistic admission? Also, do you know if these two public schools look at national school ranking?

bumpbumpbumpbumpbump

Looks like the average of holistic admit in 2012 was 2025 for Engineering, 1968 for Business, 1826 for Liberal Arts.

^Actually those are the average SAT scores for all students admitted to those colleges.

For holistic admits the average SAT was 1902.

How do you come up a specific score for holistic admits?

I also have about 120 community service hours at a hospital, will that increase my chances?
