Hello, I'm a new member and I'm not sure if this should go here. I'm currently a freshman at Miami Palmetto Senior High School. I was wondering about my chances to get into MIT or if I stand a chance in the future. I know its a bit early to post this but my stats are decent and I wanted to know it I'm on the right track.

SAT Scores: Haven't sat for it yet.
ACT Scores: ^
PSAT Score: 135 (I didn't study for the test so I did pretty bad. I'll definitely do better as a sophomore though.)

Unweighted GPA: 4.00
Weighted GPA: 4.643
Class Rank: n/a

Freshman Schedule: English Honors 1/ Geometry Honors/ Biology 1 Honors, Gifted/ World History Honors/ Band 4/ Career Research and Decision Making PS/Level 2

My schedule isn't that great but I'm only a decent student.

Clubs and Activities: Mu Alpha Theta (I placed 6th in a Regional Geometry competition)
Science Competitors Club (Competed in District Envirothon)
Part of my school's Marching Band (I play clarinet)

These are my current statistics although as a sophomore, I will be taking English Honors 2/ Pre Calculus Honors/ Chemistry 1 Honors, Gifted/ Advanced Placement European History/ Advanced Placement Environmental Science/ Advanced Placement Physics B.

100% for a great future - if you keep working hard at what you like to do.

However, if you’re asking what your chances will be to get into MIT, no one can tell you. Some will try and you’d be foolish to listen to them.

Others will help you with tips for how to improve your overall application profile (for whatever school you end up at). That kind of input is often valuable. Listen to it and to see how it applies to you.

Here is some worthwhile input (from someone in MIT admissions):

Alright, so after reading the Applying Sideways blog, I have fully understood that I have to pursue my passions. However, i still would like to know what would be the best possible way/hook to get me as close as possible to getting into MIT. What hook can stand out the most. Basically what I’m asking is: What club/activity will get me the closest to MIT? Nothing is a guarantee but what’s the closest? (Thanks for the insightful advice jpm50! )

Whatever you are most passionate about. If you are most passionate about writing poetry, then MIT is probably not the best school for you. If you are passionate about Geometry, that is a better fit.

As everyone else has said, do what you love & excel at. Lots of kids who get in do FIRST Robotics. Lots of kids who get in do art, literary magazine stuff, or work on the school newspaper. Lots of kids who get in are musical and in lots of performance groups. Others do research for fun. None of these really give you any advantage over another, as long as you love it and do well at it. I was one of the art/lit mag/music kids, so it’s not like only STEM activities matter.

That said, I’d encourage you not to get your heart set on MIT since it’s a crapshoot for anyone. You have a 4.00 after freshman year – that’s great, but that’s easy to accomplish, and you can almost definitely expect your unweighted GPA to drop in the next 3 years, so don’t get too attached to it And as for the PSAT, is that 135/160 or 135/240? Because if it’s the former, that’s pretty good, but if it’s 135/240 you are at a serious disadvantage. As “aptitude” tests, the PSAT and SAT are not truly designed to be tests you study for, and heavy, heavy studying will bring you up to maybe a 2000/2400 on the actual SAT – which is really low for MIT.

Then again, PSAT scores don’t necessarily mean much, and if you don’t do well on the SAT there’s always the ACT. I did well on the SAT, but I did reaaally well on the ACT – I found it a better-written test than the SAT.

You’ll be fine. Don’t worry about colleges yet, just work hard and have fun.

Its the 135/240. I din’t do well on my PSAT. However, I recently sad for a “diagnostic/mock” ACT Test and I was able to pull of a score of 34 with a 36 on the math and 36 on the science.

Thanks to all who have responded to me. I encourage more of you to respong but I seem to get the point about MIT applications. Feel free to post more. :D

Aside from my scores though (since I’m freshman), is there anything else that will aid me in my dream to get into MIT? (Please do not post IMO Gold, IBO Gold, etc.)

*I am just looking for the activites that will get me the “closest/closer” to MIT. :)

Just be good person. Do what you want, not the admission wants. Do what you like, not your father/mother want you to do. Find your passion, the thing without you can’t imagine your life. The thing which you would do if you had 2nd life.Try to be involved something related to math/sciences. Participate in math/science olimpyadas, participate in science fair, do research. Get a job something related to your future major. And write awesome essay about passions. This thing should show admission who you are, show your whole substance. And then you will have decent chances to get in, no more. Nobody has more chances than another guy/girl has. God knows best. I wish you good luck, because 70% luck, and 30% your academics (SAT, GPA, ECs, essays, talent etc). Because 1000 rejected student’s stats, ecs are same with accepted student’s ecs/stats.
I hope it would be hopefull.

True. I just wanted a list of activites that would make me look as competitive as possible as a future MIT applicant. These activities should NOT include (passions, International Olympiad Medals, USAMO, AIME, etc.) I Just want to know what will make me look the BEST (or as close to the BEST as possible.)

What will make YOU look best is doing something MUCH BETTER than MOST people. What good does it do for us to tell you to play the violin, participate in First Robotics, be on the Math team if you will hate it and only be average at it.

You have to find your passion that will allow you to be better than most people who do it. That is what will be your hook to give you a fighting chance to get into MIT or any other elite school.

What can you do for hours at a time and not be bored with it?

Thats not true at all. MIT is about delving into my intresting. Loving my true passions. I already stated that someone should lock this thread. So any moderator should close this thread immediately. Don’t give incorrect information. Close this.

You’ve asked this question in two different threads, and the replies in both of them are telling you the same thing.

What does it say about you (or your future learning ability to be a credible candidate) if you’re rejecting input from many who have already gone through the process?

I already stated to CLOSE this thread.I accepted the input from others already. Learn to actually READ. Sorry to say this but I don’t see a bright future for you… :(
