If there's anything else, please just ask!

It's impossible to know without a race declaration.

Asian-American (Indian Subcontinent) :-( i know

btw... add

Northwestern HPME to that list (sorry forgot it)

I'd say that you could know whether a valedictorian with 15 ap classes has a shot at top 20 schools without knowing his/her race.

As long as you dont get sub 2200 on the SAT, you should have a decent shot at all those schools.

may i ask why you are taking AP music theory...yet none of your ecs or other classes show any interest in music or the arts?

You should really work on the SAT, it will make all the difference. Using your current score:

Big Reach: MIT, Princeton Engineering, Harvard, Brown PLME, NU 7yr
High Reach: Penn, Duke, Columbia, GW 7yr, Brown
Reach: Cornell, JHU, Northwestern
Safe Match: NYU
Safety: BU, Rensselaer Polytechnic

I think you should look at some guidebook! NYU and Duke aren't even close to the same in selectivity!!

oh yeah i know...Duke is on the upper end of my "good matches" because is is not an Ivy (or MIT)

can u please explain ur rankings slipper1234??? feel free to PM me

and thanks for posting!!!

AvantGarde:

Music Theory is for my fine arts graduation requirement...it is also something I would prefer to take over Art I with freshmen :-(

i used to be in band and orchestra in elementary and middle school (but recently quit as I decided it was something I was no longer committed to)

OK...depending on your level...it might be kind of difficult. The theory part is actually managable- its just remembering some rules.

The part that's hard is ear training. That's not determined by how intelligent you are- its just an entirely different skill- like athletics.

I'm not saying you shouldn't take it...but find out more about it first and make sure you want it. I know musicians who despise the ear training part. I really don't recommend it for someone without a stronger arts background. I'm really surprised that your school would allow that as an arts distrib.

Anyway..good luck with it. If you're really interested in it, great! We need more non-musicians in this country to appreciate the arts! However, don't take it just becuase you're trying to look like you've taken every AP.

"oh yeah i know...Duke is on the upper end of my "good matches" because is is not an Ivy (or MIT)"
^duke consistantly ranks higher than a decent number of ivies.

Yeah...um Duke is def. not a good match for you if Columbia is on your reach list.

Your AI is around 226, your ECs are great and you're taking 15 AP courses and 5 honors courses.

Providing you keep your U/W GPA at 4.0 (very important), and that your test scores on the SAT I equal or beat your PSAT scores, you have a great shot at any place you apply. Anybody on here that says otherwise is insane.

You should work on your SAT I CR and Writing test more than anything right now--beating those 640 and 650 scores and getting 700+ will get you accepted at about 2-3 of the Ivies--and probably at Duke.

As far as Harvard, Princeton, and MIT--you've done what you can--and nobody really knows exactly what it takes to get into these schools, anyway.

P.S. slipper1234 is spot on with the comments about NYU vs Duke--you need to get some indication on the differences between schools--and which ones focus on what majors. NYU is one of the two best finance schools in the country (Univ of Penn is the best) and has one of the top three film/theatre schools--but is not in Duke's league in the other majors.

Good luck.

bump anyone else? please give me your advice

by the way...i got a 5 on US, not 4 lol :-)

also, take BU, GW, and Rensslaer off the list...ill go with University of Maryland as my only current safety

Calcruzer is wrong. Indian, weak ECs, below average SATs (based on PSAT) for the top schools. He'll get into many top 20, but I wouldn't bet on those on the top of his list.

haha congrats on your 5 instead of your 4. but dont want to bust your chops or anything, but GW 7 year is not a safety. 25 chosen from 700 applicants. theres no guarantee. and remember, biomed is hard to get into at jhu.

id suggest working on your SAT scores but you still have time since you're only a sophomore. and find one or two EC's and strengthen them as much as possible.

I see no glaring weaknesses for HYPM other than race and possibly location (don't know). Perfect grades with strong courseload. Good leadership. Val/Sal so rank is not a problem. Solid SAT II scores. If SAT follows, you should have a legitimate shot. We all know that means 10% or so, but you are as good as anybody else. Of course, it's all conjecture until junior year is in the books.

yeah yeah yeah! i know...i didnt mean GW 7 year as a safety...GW is the safety...and 7year is just an option (which would be a reach option) sorry that wasnt clear

and JHU is the match..biomed is a reach lol
