Chances For Top Boarding Schools

Hi guys! I’m in 8th chinese grade girl, ORM (Over Represented Minority) SO MANY ASIANS APPLYING AND SO LITTLE ACCEPTED!!! GAH, and I’m applying for the top boarding schools (Andover, lawrenceville, exeter, etc.) and all the schools in TSAO. If I apply to Lawrenceville, then I’ll be applying as day. The rest are all boarding. I go to one of the best public schools in New Jersey. BTW, it’s pretty long but don’t be scared away!

Grades:

All A’s. I take advanced math (our school has 3 math levels, I’m at the highest. We’re doing Algebra 2) but I got straight B’s in math in 6th grade with the rest all A’s. I got 2 B’s in math in 7th and 2 B’s in science and the rest all A’s. 8th grade is all A’s so far… and hopefully forever… I know, my grades definitely could be better. Thinking about them makes me depressed :((

SSAT: Didn’t take it (going to tho in Oct. SO CLOSE!). Here’s my practice test results:

Quantitative: 791
Reading: 775 (got 1 wrong… so about? idk)
Verbal: 740 (oof. not good, i know)
Total: 2306 (not so good…)

EC’s (Extracurricular Activities)

I do debate. I’m internationally ranked in Capitol Debate (one of the best debaters there). My partner and I are both pretty good. I got 2nd place in JV Capitol Debate camp against high school kids. I’m thinking about doing Lincoln-Douglass debate this year and going to Princeton for the competition.
I did Chinese debate too. My team and I got 3rd and then 1st place.
I’m student council vice president this year. Last year I was our team representative.
I’m good at writing. Scenario Writing State Competition 3rd place in 6th grade (grades 4-6) and 7th place in 7th grade (grades 7-9). A national writing contest top 3. Scholastic Honorable Mention.
I’m in yearbook club
I’m in the newspaper club.
I’m the President of our school’s community service club
I play squash (my ranking disappeared since I didn’t attend tournaments due to family reasons) Highest rating: 2.83 (I got some penalties from missing some games so that dragged my rating down a lot)
I tutor kids with mental illnesses starting from last year and continuing.
I play piano but I only have some first and second place awards in state/regional competitions.
I also paint people. My paintings are pretty good I guess. I got Celebrating Art high merit (top 25% of pieces) for 2 years. I’m thinking in sending some in for my application.
I was in my school’s relations club.
I’m doing our school’s morning broadcasting show (kind of like Good Morning America but we make everything happen, like cameras, anchors)
I did theater camp for 2 years.
I have work experience. I taught at a company in China during my 6th grade summer.
I did a marketing internship at a company in China this summer.
I did pet sitting for some locals.
I advertised for people to vote for Board of Education member for 3 years.
I play the clarinet in band (1st/2nd chair)
I did FPS (future problem solving) in 6th grade and got 4th place with my team.
I used to dance and got 1st with my team in regional/state competitions
I did leadership training camp in 2016 and I went to Leadership Training Conference (only 2 people from my school, including me, were selected to go)
I played the clarinet for a senior house and hosted a BINGO event for them for 2 years

I have a pretty bubbly and optimistic personality. I have really strong leadership skills and I like to help others. No interviews or essays or recommendation letters yet. I will not need financial aid and I do not have legacy.

I REALLY REALLY want to get in. I know being accepted is one of the best opportunities you can get!

What are my chances? Also, any tips on the Verbal section of the SSAT? Thanks for reading this and please give me an honest opinion! :))

I’m also fluent in Chinese and I take French at school… wonder if that helps

Your background certainly looks competitive, though I’m not particularly big on suggesting chances in threads like these. Cast a broad net and don’t pin your hopes on any one school…your likely to be successful on 3/10.

I mainly wanted to comment on your SSAT. You do not need to score perfect on the SSAT to get in to a great school. All of the scores you listed are likely over 90th percentile and your total is probably close to 99th. Do your best on test day, but relax and realize that there is likely no impact on your likelihood of success once you are in the mid 90s. At that point, you’ll have nicely cleared the SSAT hurdle and schools will be looking at the other components of you application (LORs, essays, and looking at how your ECs may fill a need at the school). So poor any extra effort into those, rather than sweating about a 97th vs a 99th percentile score.

For the vocabulary section, do Quizlet SSAT (upper level) lists…over and over and over and… They definitely help to make substantial improvements in the vocab score.

Good luck!

ok thanks!
