I am a Junior from the Dominican Republic. I go to a tiny private school (my graduating class has around 20 students) but I graduate with an American diploma. My school rarely sends students to top schools (Barnard, BU, MgGill, WPI have accepted some students).

UW GPA: 3.8
(Highest GPA in my class even though it doesn't rank, and school does not weigh GPA).

SAT I: CR 700 W 710 M 670

I have only taken it once and plan on taking it at least once or twice more.

SAT II: USH 700

Plan on taking Math II and Literature

APs

Took US Hist and Eng Lang this year. My school did not offer them so I took them online and got credit for them (one of three students at my school who were allowed to do this).

Senior year courseload: AP Span Lit, AP Psych (at school- only two APs offered), AP English Lit, AP Macro (online), Physics, Calculus, Yearbook.

Model United Nations Delegate (10, 11, 12): participated in four conferences (Head delegate for two of them).

Volunteer at a School Foundation for homeless kids in the region (11, 12): Student head of school improvement team, organized events raising over $5000 total, began a project to build facilities using eco-bricks, accumulated 60+ hours with this.

Student Council: (9, 10 class rep, expecting president for 12).

Competitive soccer (9, 10, 11, 12).

I have many other random ECs that I'm not sure if I should omit, such as choreographing and leading a march that all schools are required to do for independence day, and random community service activities that I do as well.

What are my chances at these? Any other schools I should be looking at, or anything that I could possibly do to help my chances?

I think that your grades are about even with other students… however your e.c. are really not that strong

Thanks so much for chancing me! You’ve got a better shot than you think, considering that you have done so much. Your SAT scores are little low for your reach schools, but the fact that you are a URM from the Dominican Republic works in your favor.

@Truman: really? I was under the impression that my grades were a bit sub-par because of the deflation in my school, but that my ECs were impressive.

Any other thoughts?

Bump anyone?
I’ll chance back anyone who tells me to.

I would retake SAT to boost it to 2150+ or so and would also suggest getting higher SAT II. Otherwise, you’ll have a good shot w/ URM advantage.

Yeah I’m definitely retaking the SATs.
Anything else I can do to improve my scores?

Are you applying as an international?

Yes, I live in the Dominican Republic.

ivies are not happening for you… sorry. Maybe penn or cornell if you apply ED, but you’d REALLY have to raise those SATs to about a 2200 or 2250+, in which case you’d have a great shot at either of those schools ED. tufts gtown and cmu all sound reasonable with an improved SAT. but right now with that SAT you’re looking at NE and Emerson on your list you have right now. sorry

chance back!!!

@AnonymousStudent: Ouch, but at least you’re being honest! I’m prepping for the SATs all summer and I’ve had some improvements so far on practice tests but I still have a long way to go.

Anything else I can do to improve my chances? A way to take my ECs to the next level or something?

I agree with AnonymousStudent somewhat. You have NE/Emerson and as of now the others are reaches. If you can get a 2250+ on the SAT, i would say that the ivies can become reaches, only the low ones(not harvard), and that the middle of your list schools like georgetown become matches.

Your Extra-curricular activities are outstanding! If I were you, I would retake the SAT though. Good Luck!

I’m only applying to Harvard out of pressure from my parents even though I’ve told them time and time again that there is 0% chance I will get in. I’m not expecting it at all.

If I retake the SAT and get 2250+ (my practice tests are in the 2100’s as of now but I have three months to prepare), take Math II and Literature and score 750+ on both, and focus on writing my essays this summer, would you say I have a fairly decent chance at Tufts or Georgetown? Those are my favorites outside of Brown, but I am not expecting a large envelope from that school either.

Yes. In fact if you can get those subject test scores AND (more importantly) if you really get over a 2250 you will not only have a fairly decent chance at Tufts and Georgetown, you also would have a shot at Brown. Don’t doubt yourself!

Ok! I’m opening the Blue Book as I type this :)

Bumping this one last time

I have a pretty similar story since i’m from DR too but i don’t go to school there. I’m also applying as an international and i think you have a pretty good shot. You already know what to do for your SAT’s and try to master the essay that is your golden ticket.

Please Chance me back. thanks

@Star118: Can you send me a link to your thread? I can’t seem to find it.
