Chances for top schools

I am going to be a senior at a semi-competitive highscool. I am looking into the ivies and equivalents (hoping to study science, maybe biophysics or something science), thanks for those who chance me and i will chance back.

Essays will be very good I hope.

Letter recs: APUSH Teacher (will be incredible), AP Lang teacher (will be incredible)
My research mentor (should be very good). Might send in my research paper, hopefully it could be published (yet to be written).

There are some other things that are not worth mentioning. Thanks.

And forgot to add that I have placed first in various regional and state research fairs in tenth grade.

Bump 10char.

Where do you live? If you are in the midwest than you have a very good chance at all of the top schools. If you live in the east coast like NJ or NY you are just slightly above average. Also if you are asian its going to be pretty tough.

East coast, non-asian.

bump 10char

If it adds to anything, a lot of the schools listed are affiliated with the research institution i am working at…

I think you have a very good chance. Ivy League schools are always very random because they look for uniqueness, but you seem to be an extremely well-rounded student. Your GPA and SAT scores are up there, and you have a lot of volunteer hours which is great.

Isef is a non-factor. The competition is in May - too late to have an impact. Why didn’t you compete this past year?

Everything else is great - unfortunately, like about 20,000 other great apps. So, you have a legit shot at all those schools and I’m sure you’ll find a really great spot. Cast a wide net.

Ya true…but the regional competition to make it to ISEF is held in February-March I think, so maybe I could call in that update. Last year my project wasn’t advanced enough for ISEF…

It looks good. Your SAT and GPA are high enough for the schools. Plus, I think the research will act as your “hook” to hook you up to the colleges since they are linked.

bumpity bump

Unless you get Intel STS semi-finalist or something big like that, I don’t see you going anywhere beyond Columbia or UPenn.
Still, you have a chance. But you should really work on your project for STS and ISEF. Unless, it is as good as last year’s finalist projects, then you leave it up to chance.
Good luck!
Chance me back?

You definitely have a shot. Try to do something crazy this summer to set you apart from others… that’ll give you the little edge that you need

Ya that’s why I am doing research (the lab is highly affiliated with many ivies and other top schools)…Hope to enter and place in STS.

while your stats are great, every school on your list is a crapshoot. have you thought about safeties?

Everything looks fine to me. I agree that you should consider some safeties (if you haven’t done so already). The only advice I can give you is to make sure your application jumps out at the admissions reps.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1358147-chance-duke-ed-vandy-cornell-georgetown-u-florida.html

Ya i got safeties and matches…These are the ones I want to be chanced on though haha. Will placing in Siemens/STS improve me immensely?

Yes, placing (making the cut as a semi-finalist) at STS will advance you if you have not already been rejected (ED). I think the semi list for STS is announced well before regular decisions. I dont know if Seimans is early enough to help.

I have heard of one case (don’t make a principle out of a single event) where making the semis at STS triggered several schools into issuing likely letters.

But, if science at that level isn’t your passion, it will be very difficult to achieve those levels of recognition. The competition is intense; the projects are amazing; the kids live this passion 24/7. Such levels of passion cannot be forced; the passion comes from within without real regard to the prizes.

The research this summer is the best part. I love the facility, the scientists, everything. I have always loved science. STS is just the icing on the cake.
