I'll make it brief: I'm currently a freshman at Marlboro College. For those of you not familiar with the place, it's pretty well-respected in academia but, for whatever reason, isn't very well known (most likely because of its size: ~350 students). I'm getting good grades, and I imagine I'll finish this semester (if not year) with at least a 3.6.

I'm a non-traditional student in that I took two years off from schooling after graduating from high school... I was awarded a scholarship to study in England for an entire year (English Speaking Union), and the second year I just spent trying to save money to afford a private school. I do extracurricular activities (Art in Action, Pride Meetings, etc.), and my SAT was 1450 (31 for ACT).

I'm really only looking at transferring to Amherst, though UChicago is likely as well. Is anyone here familiar with the rates for Amherst? I'm near the school so I plan on visiting a couple times just to make sure it's right for me...
Let me know if you need any other information.
Cheers

not to change the topic of your thread...but out of curiousity, why do you want to transfer out of marlboro? it's one of the schools i'm considering transferring into.

don't get me wrong... i love marlboro. the people here are badass, the classes are great... but i'm just getting this feeling that it's too small for me. in all honesty, i feel almost as if the focus here is TOO academic. not to diss the school, but they just don't have the money to have a sports department, or to be able to fund different committees.

at this time in my life, i feel i need more development in the social aspects of my character... not to mention i'd at least like the possibility to go on some dates (i'm a gay male, and the pickings here are slim).

additionally, amherst has amazing financial aid, and from their calculators online, it shows i would graduate debt free from there. that's hard to match in a lot of other schools.

so, in summation: if marlboro was larger, i'd love to stay here. the teachers are top notch, the small class sizes are amazing... the people are super-friendly. it's great. but it IS small, and as much as i'd like to say i don't want to go out and party-hard, i do. it's college, you know? i need to get around wink wink, haha...

that being said, if you have any other questions feel free to ask!!

You ever think about applying to Wesleyan, Oberlin, Grinnell, Reed, Colorado, one of the Claremont Colleges, or other gay-friendly schools besides Amherst?

I just ask because, while you do have a chance at Amherst, your GPA could be a little higher--especially since so few transfers get into AC. UChicago is definately academic in focus. While you would have the opportunity for a social life, academics might make it somewhat difficult.

Just a thought.

PS--Amherst and the 5 College Consortium are awesome.

calipharius: where did you get your information? i actually found a document discussing the transfer applicants for the class of 2009... that year 25 out of around 168 were accepted, 14 of which were male. obviously this is going to change year to year, but it doesn't seem to be nearly as low as people have said. i really doubt any school would accept as low as 9 people for transfer... it's possible the total YIELD was 9 people, but rarely, if ever, does everyone who gets accepted actually end up transferring.

one of the reasons i'm looking at amherst is its excellent financial aid. it's one of the few schools who is willing to recognize me as independent (due to extraneous circumstances that i won't go into here). i've already looked into the more "gay-friendly" liberal arts schools, and most of them won't. if i were to apply for transfer there, i might get accepted but i wouldn't be able to afford it.

also, as far as the "academic in focus" comment, i don't mind having a lot of homework. i LIKE having things to study... that's why i came to marlboro. it's just, when push comes to shove and i want to go out on a friday night, there's nowhere to go here. not to mention i kind of want to partake in some sports...

i'm also fairly confident in my abilities to get a 4.0 here; the 3.6 was just the lower-end of the scale.

It seems like you are really attached to Amherst; good luck and I hope you get in. However, I would still have a few backups because the admit rate for transfers at Amherst is not that high.

Unless besides Amhesrt, you don't mind staying at Marlboro...

Just give youself some alternative options.

i'm definitely trying to not get my hopes up because i DO recognize the fact that colleges like Amherst have low acceptance rates all around. i think i'm going to try and talk to some of my high school's college advisors and see if my high school has any connections with Amherst... i was able to attend a prestigious private school, so i imagine that definitely wouldn't hurt.

i'd be happy at marlboro, it's just that i'm going so far into debt here that i have to question if it's really worth it. oh, the pain of attending a small school!

Im sorry, but what was the point of this thread? Like i understand you are asking for chances, but really...what is the point when ur going to apply anyways? You'll find out your chances when you get your decision.

when i originally posted the thread, i had not been able to find the report giving the numbers for transfers. i looked through previous threads and could not find any source of reliable information for those numbers, so i made the thread with that in mind.
