Hello guys, I have a quick question about transfer opportunities. I am not in college, but this is just a thought for possible future plans. Does the college where you go to impact your chances for transferring to top colleges such as Northwestern or UPenn or Yale? I am a rising senior in high school, and I am interested in attending Emory or UVA. If I were to attend colleges such as Howard or Morehouse, does that put me at an disadvantage? I am not saying that I am planning to transfer but it's just a question and a thought for the future. Thank you for your help.

Emory seems to be more egalitarian with who it admits as a transfer, more so than many other schools of its caliber. UVA, according to its transfer FAQs seems to have a deceptively high transfer rate. That is, almost 50% of the transfers it admits started at a Virginia community college which may skew the transfer acceptance rate.

That being said, according to your chance thread, you’re considering applying to Emory this year. There are many school that are somewhat similar to Emory, but less competitive (although they may give worse financial aid). What exactly appeals to you about the school? I might be able to give you some suggestions.

I’m kinda confused about your question. Are you asking if attending Howard/Morehouse vs. Emory/UVA would make a difference when you apply to transfer to NU/Penn/Y?

Oh I definitely misread that. Don’t worry OP, you probably won’t get in as a transfer anyways, so don’t pick a college based on the likelihood of transferring into an Ivy (unless it’s Cornell and you’re guaranteed a spot)

Yes, I am saying that does a person who attends morehouse college or a state university such as UF have a disadvantage when applying to transfer to a ivy league such as UPenn or Columbia or Yale? Sorry for the confusion. Also I am not picking based on the likelihood.

IMO (others may not agree), I think that colleges take three things into consideration when assessing academic performance: gpa, course rigor and institution. That said, I don’t think there’s enough difference between UF and Emory/UVA to make a difference (sorry, but I’m really not familiar enough with Howard or Morehouse to make a comparison). There would be much more of a contrast between say a CC and highly selective private (please no flames, just trying to keep it real; I’m a CCC > UC transfer myself).

Between the colleges you’ve mentioned, I think your grades and other factors will carry much more weight than the school you attend.

Depends on the school
