What is "-Namibian-American Exchange Program- participant (10, 11)"?

Were you a foriegn exchange student? If so, definately stress that in your application.

And its cool that you were an intern for Obama, i canvassed for him door to door on the day of the mississippi primary, but i would think twice and do a bit of research before i put that on my application. I wouldnt think that it would hurt you, but if you ended up on the edge of acceptance (tulane is becoming increasingly competetive) with the wrong app reader it could be trouble.

But id still say you have a great shot.

FYI Im from South Mississippi, about an hour from NO, and it is really frickin hot down here. 100+ degrees everyday for the past week or so. NO is actually a little cooler with the breeze off the gulf. But its humid like you wouldnt believe. You could near about drown in the humidity.

Hope i didnt discourage you from applying because tulane is a great school and NO is a really fun city. Just visit before you decide for sure. Well, good luck.

Also if you could help me out and review my chances id be greatful. My thread is on the first page of "what are my chances". Its titled "Chances?? por favor".
Thanks

first off, thanks to all of you for responding!

@lazydog: yes, i was an exchange student last summer in namibia. although i did go to school there, i mainly helped out in the AIDS orphanages with the children that lived there. i really want to write about my experiences in my essay but i thought that the topic might be a bit trite. i feel like everybody writes about how they saved the world one summer. i just want to stand out especially because of my sub-par gpa. also, it's funny that you mentioned the weather in NOLA because i love love love the heat. the more disgusting, the better :) we just came back from visiting tulane and loyola and i absolutely loved tulane and the NOLA weather! the campus visit pretty much sealed the deal that i would i apply EA.

@thisdude415: i hear what you're saying about the APs and thanks for that because i had it in my resume. guess i'll take it out now. i took the ACT and didn't do so well :( my math score killed me. so i stuck with the SAT. i might take the SAT again in october though to get my math score up. do you think i should?

also, do any of you know how much tulane's admissions standards have been raised since the class of 2012. i feel like things are going to get sooo much more competitive which sucks :( i'm banking on my bringing some diversity to the place.

yeah i saw somewhere that the admission percentage dropped from around 44% to around twenty something. I think that its more because of a larger applicant pool. I dont think the average test scores ect, changed very much. But it will still be a little harder than in years past.

you should research it for yourself, go to tulane's website. They should have all of the latest admission stats. and i wouldnt worry about getting in. you should be fine.

also could you please chance me. My thread is titled "chances?? por favor"

also, do you know if tulane has a reputation for being conservative or liberal? i don't know if i want to put anything about my work with barack obama even though it's kind of a big deal to me.

Be aware of the crime statistics down there. My cousin's son graduated from Tulane and went on and earned his masters in the spring. From the time he began his freshman year and finished his masters, he saw a dramatic increase in crime. He said that since the hurricane, crimes including firearms and violence have spread closer and closer to the campus. His younger brother was offered a scholarship to go there but because of the escalating crime in the area, the family decided it was best to turn down the offer and go someplace else. I just wanted you to be aware of the change in the area.

@nysmile:
thank you for that information! my mom has been trying to get me hooked to another college because of her fear of the new orleans area's weather. but we weren't even aware of the rising crime rate! thank you!

You're welcome. I didn't want to scare you but I thought that I should pass on the info that I was given. He loved the school but over time, he saw the change. He didn't feel that it was a safe place for his younger brother (will be a freshman at another school this fall). The armed robbery on campus was the deciding factor for his family. The bad stuff is just getting closer and closer to the campus. The link is informative.

It's pretty easy to get in EA. Around here (LI), kids seem to apply to Tulane EA and use it as their safety. Have you expressed interest to them about applying? If so, there is a good chance they will email you an online link to a quick priority online application. It's free to apply using it and I think that's how Tulane was able to skew their selectivity rating. Many kids applied because it was free to do so. That's how the percentage admitted lowered. Don't believe the increased selectivity--it's based on these extra kids applying on a whim because of the free application fee. All of the kids that applied from my son's public high school got in (maybe 4 or 5 kids) but only one is going and that's because they gave him a full tuition based on merit and a bunch of AP credits. You have a good chance of being accepted. Definitely apply EA if you're interested in Tulane. It's always nice to have one or two EA acceptances in your pocket. Go to their website, click on prospective students, and click on "join our mailing list." They will mail and email a bunch of info.
