Chances for UC Berkeley and UCLA, plus I will chance you back!

Okay, so I am a high school junior. I have screwed up my GPA. Not as bad as you may think, but I knew I could have done better. Okay, let me explain.

You don't really have to read this next paragraph.

As a freshman, I royally screwed up my GPA that year. The thing is that I was in a special program that loaded on extra work and made it extremely challenging in my classes. Only a handful of other students were in this program and very few people had good grades. So my GPA freshman year was 3.2. However, this did not worry me much, since I decided that colleges do not care much about freshman year grades. In sophomore year, the first semester I earned a GPA of 3.33(UW) and 3.5 (W). I could've had another A, but I had an 89% and a mean teacher.. you know the story. However, second semester of sophomore year, I earned all A's, and first semester junior year I have also earned all A's.

Okay here's the important stuff.

Summary..

Freshman First Semester grades .. 3.0
Second semester . . . . . . . . . . . 3.4
Cummulative . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3.2
Sophomore First Semester . . . . . .3.33 (UW) 3.5(W)
Second semester. . . . . . . . . . . . 4.0 (UW) 4.16(W)
Cummulative sophomore . . . . . . . 3.67(UW) 3.83(W)
Cummalative both years . . . . . . . 3.43(UW) 3.51(W)
Junior First Semester . . . . . . . . . 4.0 (UW) 4.67(W)
Cummulative all years . . . . . . . . .3.71(UW) 4.09(W)

Can you check my math please, I am not sure if I am calculating it correctly..

I am applying to UCs mostly. I know that I do not include freshman year in my GPA in my application (THANK GOD).

So far I have taken all of the available AP classes except for AP Calculus AB. I will be in Calculus AB senior year.

Now here are some other stuff:
I am co-captain of my basketball team, captain of science bowl, and captain of my school's Chinese club, officer in red cross, and officer in CSF. I am also involved in NHS. Plus many more ECs (summer business camp, music camp..)

Plus I had a PSAT score of 219. I made the cutoff score which was 217.. hahaha!

I also have a part time job at a supermarket.

And I have received a 5 on my AP European History test.

I am ranked in the top 10% and it is possible I may be ranked in the top 5%, but I'm going to assume that I am not in the top 5%.

Do you think colleges would forgive my bad grades in freshman and first semester sophomore year, which pretty much dragged down my whole GPA.

Also, what are the chances that I may have borderline stats and either Berkeley or UCLA will ask for my first semester senior grade transcripts?

Give me like a percentage chance please, and I will chance you back! Thank you very much!

Wait, do you live in California?
If yes, you are in.
If not, I would say slight reach

and I think UC GPA only accepts eight honour/AP courses...

I'm assuming you live in California, and you get a SAT around 2200-2300.

UC Berkeley: 65.673%
UCLA: 72.366

The grades hurt... a lot. But luckily for you, both these UCs have relatively low SAT scores; the avg of applicants last year, I believe, was 2030. So your SAT's give a MAJOR boost. Your ECs aren't amazing, but they're not bad. I'd say they are on par with the generic UC applicant, again, its your standardized tests that will get you in.

Your SATs will really help you (assuming you get that high).

Yes, I live in California. I thought that freshman grades do not matter so much, plus freshman grades are not used to calculate GPA for UC admissions.

And I always thought that the signs of improvement would help me.

Freshman grades matter very little, and sophomore grades don't matter too much either.

However, they are still looked at, and, though you show (significant) improvements, it's still hard to come back from completely. If your cumulative GPA was from just getting fair grades the whole time, it would probably be 50/50 for each, the upward improvement is what put you into more likely than not (this is, of course, in my opinion).

Sophomore grades don't matter too much? I thought that sophomore grades matter just as much as junior year grades.

Do the scores I earn on AP test help me out too? Plus my PSAT score qualify me as a semi-finalist. Would that help my chances also?

Definately not as much as junior grades. And though they influence the decision, its not nearly as much as do junior grades.

High AP scores help. National Merit Semifinalist helps.

lol im in a similar situation as you

sophmore =3.00
2nd= 3.7

junior= 3.9

my grades are all over the place. but my counselor said, they will like the fact that you are improving, and that it dosent seriously hurt my chances, like some of these know it alls are saying, so dont worry too much.

ur ec's are great, and thats a impressive psat score.

It really depends on your SAT scores and the grades you get this semester.

lol i just read my last post, and it said all them know it alls.

didnt mean to make it sound so harsh =D

hopefully no one got offended

This is great. I feel so much better! And please, post your chance threads here and I love to chance you!

I would like more people to chance me, please and thank you.

u show some nice improvement. UC's dont really look at freshman grades..so ur good. dont worry i know people with lower stats applying to UC's. maybe you could apply to cal poly slo or something else for safeties? also, make sure you do good enough on yo SAT/ACT.
