SAT1- 1960 1st time (didnt study much though, ill probably be able to get 2100 after studying the blue book)
SAT2- Chem 800
Math IIC didnt take yet but ill get 700-800

Ive taken all the A-G requirements and recommendations for UC's except Spanish 3 :[ (both spanish 3 teachers at my school **** me off)

EC's:
4 years of adv band in high school, served as section leader (i play clarinet/bass clarinet)
1 year marching band, section leader
10 years piano, taking CMEA Advanced Level this spring
4 years violin, 2 years viola, 2 years in san jose youth symphony
200hrs+ community service at nursing home/hospital
Math Club Co-founder/Vice President
Junior Statesmen of America Co-founder
Member of a Work Experience Program run by San Jose; I worked at a youth program during summer

I think that my main weaknesses are:
not taking spanish 3
taking honors/AP english classes 9-11th grade and then not taking AP Eng lit
low SAT1 score (but I should be able to raise it to 2100)
no sports (except if marching band counts :D)

I also have a few extra questions.
Should I take more than 8 AP's? I've heard that UC's dont count more than 8.
Will I be able to write on college apps that I am self-studying AP's?
Should I take more SAT2's or will just math and chem be enough?
Should i take AP Physics C instead of B?

Any response is greatly appreciated. Ill be happy to add anything if Im missing something.

What's your UC gpa? weighted and uw?

bridge8989,

Your chances look excellent for UCB and UCLA. (If you are aiming to be admitted into the College of Engineering, the competitive factor is stepped up.) A quick glance tells me that your UC GPA is 3.9uw and 4.3w (soph/junior year grades) -- clearly at a superlative level. Your SAT I score is only average, and you will enhance our chances by boosting this test score (remember, UC will accept total SAT score from one sitting only, no combining to form higher aggregate scores). Your one SAT Subject Test score is great, and I'm guessing that you'll do very well on the Math IIC.

Your academic courses are evaluated for rigor by the admissions people, and therefore it makes sense to challenge yourself if it does not prove to be a burden to maintaining your sanity. In actuality, the UC system counts only 4 AP/Honors courses (or 8 semesters) toward additional weighting of your UC GPA (for grades received in year 10 & 11). You will need to take at least one more SAT Subject Test -- if your planned major is physical sciences-related or math, you will want to take the Math IIC test for sure, because I think it may be required. Consider the following SAT testing scenario: Register for the SAT I for October, and register for the SAT Subject Tests for November. In November, take 2 Subject Tests -- the Math IIC test and one other that you think you will do well in. UC will take only the top 2 Subject Test scores, so you'll be increasing your chances by taking 2 tests instead of just the one.

Take whatever AP Physics or other classes you want, but don't kill yourself since it's your senior year. The AP exams for which you get at least a 3 will be considered for college credit by the UC system. In some cases, they may not allow credit at all for some AP exams OR they may require a score of at least a 4.

Check the UC online application to see if there is room for you to put self-study. I think there is. Do the self-study if you are indeed interested in these subjects, but don't feel that you need to take more courses, because you do not. Your SAT I score is your relative weak point at this time, and it may be offset by your strong GPA.

Reference the UC Admissions site: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/welcome.html

Good luck!

UCB/UCLA: Match

UCB/UCLA slight reach

Why do I disagree with those two above? Simple. Low SAT, and a deceivingly high gpa.

Your GPA is indeed high, but your courseload is terribly low. 4 classes as a junior? 5 classes as a sophomore?

Plus not taking 3 years of language will hurt. 3 years is highly recommended by the UCs.

BTW, which school do you go to? I go to Lynbrook.

sai2004... OUCH, man I thought I was tough! ;)

Actually, he took 5 classes as a junior but 4 of them were AP courses, plus half of his classes for grades 10/11 were AP level. He's not cruising into his senior year either, and the adcom will look favorably at that. I agree his SAT is only average, and he'll improve his chances at UCB and UCLA if he can bring the scores up. One thing that jumps out is that the guy plays a handful of instruments, and has advanced to the advanced level for CMEA (piano). He's part of the San Jose Youth Symphony in his secondary instrument (strings). That's a lot of committment. Plus he's been a co-founder of two clubs at his H.S., and he's done 200+ hours of community service. Those EC's look compelling, combined with his GPA and rigorous courseload.

BTW, one problem with a lot of high schools, perhaps not at Lynbrook (which is an excellent high school with a great reputation), is that limited funding prevents students from being able to take more than 5 courses, due in part to limited sections offered and scheduling conflicts. It's a problem with public high schools in CA that doesn't want to go away. Especially with AP classes, there's considerable contention whereby not all who want to take a given AP classs are able. Some public high schools have "lotteries" to determine who will be able to take an AP course that is oversubscribed.

You'll notice that I rarely say anybody is a MATCH for UCB/UCLA, because the competition is so stiff. Nonetheless, I think the OP has a strong chance... as long as he doesn't declare himself to be a Spanish major. ;)

I go to Evergreen Valley, its a new high school making it possible for me to start Math club and JSA :D. Lynbrook's math club pwns us though.

Yes, my school is extremely limited on funds. Believe it or not, my high school, a high-tech facility loaded with ibm/apple laptops, cant afford hiring more teachers and offering more AP classes. I tried taking AP Physics sophomore year but my b!tchy school limited me to one AP. My school also allocates 2 periods for all AP science classes; no idea why. Band also fills up a spot in my schedule every year.

Here's every class Ive taken so far in HS
9th grade-honors English, algebra 2, physics, spanish 1, band, pe, international relations (no idea y my school gave me this class)

Summer- geometry

10th grade-APWH, band,Precalc, English2 Honors, Chemistry, Spanish 2, PE

11th grade- AP Chemistry (2 periods long), AP Calculus AB, AP English Lang and Comp, US History, Band

Lol. I know some girl that goes there. Pity your school has that 2 period science thing, but hopefully colleges will understand.

I think the OPs chances depend a lot on the SAT retake. Since he's only taken 5 classes per year, he'll need a higher SAT score to compensate. I also think it depends a lot on whether or not he applies for engineering as a major. If so, the SATs need to definitely be higher, and even then he may not get in--any other major, then it may not be so important.

[-0_0-] ucb ucla safe matcHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

wow i haven't been on this forum for a while....

anyways, I think you're a match at both. btw, perumatations that was really unnecessary.

evergreen is so rich. i saw your campus. so huge and new and i cna't believe you guys got laptops.
