Hello, I am currently entering my senior year of high school and would like to attend a UC campus. What are my chances? I really like UCR and UCI. I plan on studying in the field of Biological Sciences. Also, with my grades and my intended major, should I apply undecided or should I declare my intended major?

SAT: 1600- 460 on Critical Reading, 550 on Math, 590 on Writing (retaking in the fall of senior year)
GPA: Freshman 3.443/2.857
Sophomore 4.0/3.5 (No AP)
Junior 3.571/3.833 (3 AP's)
Senior schedule : AP Calc AB, AP English Lit, AP Gov/ AP Econ, Physics

Extracurricular: Gleaning fruits with the club at school
Volunteering at local library
All help is appreciated, Thanks!

You asked for UC’s so here we go

UCB: high reach
UCLA: high reach
UCSD: high reach
UCD: reach
UCI: low reach
UCSB: high match
UCSC: match
UCR: eligible
UCM: eligible

Please take the SAT again and aim about 200-300 points higher. Your GPA is okay for the lower UC’s but you need a higher SAT. Make sure you write a killer personal statement to make up for your EC’s. Volunteering at a library isn’t exactly special nor does it relate with your chosen major. My friends say never go undeclared, but I don’t know if you think your major is impacted then just do it.

When you say “low reach” for UCI, how low is it for UCI? Also, for UCR and UCM, “eligible” means safety right? Or is that “match”? Thanks for the help BTW.

If you’re in the top 9% at your school, you should be eligible for an opening on a UC campus, it’s usually Merced or Riverside. Low reach is like 10-15% chance that you’ll get in. Your GPA, SAT and EC’s just aren’t good enough for UCI. But you should have no trouble getting into UCR.

UCB: high reach
UCLA: high reach
UCSD: reach
UCD: reach
UCI: low reach
UCSB: low reach
UCSC: match
UCR: low match
UCM: safety
For UC Davis, try applying under a less impacted major (like English or History or something like that), and if you get in, you can easily change your major during the winter quarter. I don’t know if it’s as easy to change majors at the other UCs though

Careful, it’s always risky to play that game. You’ll never know until one day your advisor says your major is too full. By the way if anyone knows, is it possible to choose different majors for each UC? Like choose a less impacted one at a higher ranked UC and pick your choice for a lower ranked UC.

Thanks for all the help, everybody. Any other words of advice on how to improve my chances for other UC’s , and any other good places for undergraduates in California? Thanks!

See, what you need to understand is, you’re gonna get a lot of opinions but I’m sure you get the general idea of where you’re gonna end up with what you have to offer.
Forgive me if you don’t want advice, but with that GPA, I’m sure you expect to go somewhere more competitive than the lower 2-3 UC schools. I HIGHLY recommend you retake the SAT and pull the score up by 200-300 points. If not, take the ACT and aim for a 30ish. If you make all of this happen, your chances for some of the better UCs increase drastically.

Don’t concentrate on where you can get in right now, you have your senior year to go, work on those standardized tests.

Goodluck!

What other competitive schools do you think I should I aim for, rather than the lower 2-3 UC’s? I’ll try to raise my SAT score, thanks for the advice.
