chances for UC

do i have any chance at all with a 3.1UC gpa and a 2310 SAT score…and decent EC?

Are you in-state? Why the mismatch with low GPA, high SAT?

UC’s are very GPA focused, so if you have extenuating circumstances regarding low GPA, this can be addressed in one of your essays or in the additional comments section. How rigorous of a HS curiculum have you taken? IB/AP?

UCR/UCM/UCSC would be your best shot, but if you have an explanation for your lower GPA, then you may have a chance at some of the other UC’s.

yea personal things happend to me that caused my low gpa…and im in state

does CSUs like cal Poly slo use the same UC gpa? if so do I have a better chance or about the same?

and do UC even read the personal statement or only if you’re borderline?

Cal poly SLO uses 9th grades along with 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation just use the same GPA calculator. Here is the Freshman Profile for SLO from this year. You will see that SLO is as competitive as many of the UC’s, so again GPA may be a problem and SLO does accept personal statements, so no way to explain the issues related to your GPA. Much will depend upon your intended major with SLO.

Yes, the UC’s read personal statements, so they can have a positive impact on your chances. UCLA/UCB and UCSB tend to put more emphasis on EC’s and personal statements. I would apply to the UC’s regardless and hope for the best, just make sure you have some solid Match and Safety schools on your list.

So I do a lot of volunteering at my local library …how do UCs know that I’m telling the truth…what proof do I need to show? Sorry i’m asking a lot of questions by the way…im just scared about my chances. thanks for you’re help.

UC’s will audit a very small percentage of applicants asking for proof of their EC’s. Since you volunteer at the library, ask the librarian to sign a statement indicating the time spent volunteering. I really would not worry about it unless you list an exorbitant amount of hours which would be difficult to achieve which could be a red flag to admissions.

ok thanks!

Great advice from @gumbymom above - I think you are a shoe in for UCM. With a compelling story in your application essay, you might make it into other UCs as well.

The mismatch between your GPA and SAT mean you should apply very broadly. Try a few top schools but, be sure to include a couple of CSUs to keep your options open.

Good luck.
