I have fairly strong EC's including 600+ community service hours and officer of 2 major clubs (cofounder of one). I also have played soccer with school (captain) and on clubs since childhood as well as running track and won a few kung fu competitions.

What are my chances for all of the UC's, Cal, LA and SD in particular?

Okay, a few things to mention here--again for the eightieth time--the UCs don't count freshman year grades and don't count senior year grades. They add points for specified honors courses (not what your school counts as honors, but what the UCs count as honors), and for AP and IB courses, up to 8 semester courses. They count all three SAT I scores (only the best single sitting, not the best individual scores from multiple sittings) and they count only the two best SAT II scores. Then each individual campuses have other things they count--or don't count.

So, since I don't know how you computed your GPA, I'll just presume it's for the sophomore and junior years only.

In that case:
UC Berkeley--slight reach
UCLA--match to slight reach
UCSD-match

Obviously your SAT scores and good ECs are what's getting you in, since the GPA alone isn't normally good enough for any of the above schools.

Also, the other UCs to consider applying to:
UCD/UCSB/UCI--safe match
UCSC/UCR/UCM-safeties

oh, and for those who don't already know--there is a 10th UC--UCSF--but it only grants medical degrees and nursing programs--and I don't think it offers any bachelors degrees.

4.3 is good enough for berkeley and UCLA as long as you are not going to do Engineering.

given your sat and gpa, you are already probably in. The ECs just tilt the scales in your favor more. I would say you are probably in both uc berk and la.

Apply to stanford. you have shot, not a good one.

hikaru2005, it's not possible for hippo2 to have a 4.3 W GPA for the UCs if his/her U/W GPA is 3.7. You and hippo2 aren't considering the fact that the UCs only allow you to count 8 semester courses as honors. Even if hippo2 only took 24 classes, then 3.7 times 24 is around 89, you add 8 points--giving 97, then divide by 24 getting a 4.05 W GPA. If hippo2 took more than 24 courses, then the average is even lower.

Since the UC GPA is actually only around 4.05 or so maximum, this means that even with the great SAT scores, hippo2 is still a slight reach for UC Berkeley and a match to slight reach for UCLA. I do wish hippo2 well, though, and hope he/she gets in to UC Berkeley and UCLA.

Personally, I think he/she has a much better shot at USC than at Stanford. And, if hippo2 doesn't mind going out-of-state, he/she should consider schools like Georgia Tech, William & Mary, or NYU. They are all matches or slight reaches.

You know, hikaru2005--I don't mind you giving your opinion, but I do mind you spending your time being critical of mine--especially when you are wrong with your statistics. I will admit when I make a mistake--and already did earlier this evening on the post to jeanne--what about you? Will you admit your mistake here?

UC Berkeley: Match
UCLA: Match
UCSD: Match/Safe Match

All the other lower UC's you are in. I would imagine you would atleast get into 2 of the 3 top tier UC's (UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD). Your GPA might be a bit low for the top three UC's, but your SAT is above their averages, so i would think it would be good for atleast two of the top three, if not all three.

Calcruzer - I might have maken a mistake. Happy?

By the way, UC Berkeley and UCLA use a fully weighted gpa, I've read somewhere. All UCs use the UC weighted gpa, but Berkeley and LA look at the fully weighted as well, or at least that is waht I have heard.

read the hout report on uc berkeley admissions 2005. I think that is where I got it. it's like 60 something pages.

OP's UCGPA uncapped is probably like 4.5, and maybe like 4.1 capped. But if the weighted GPA is that much higher, the OP probably took a lot of honors courses. Rigor is considered by all colleges.

That's plenty high for UCB/UCLA/UCSD. EC's aren't really considered much.

Most people with the OP's stats end up getting into UCLA/UCB.

is his stats not good enough for the engineering program at berkeley/ucla?

how much harder is Engineering to get into than regular? and is computer science actually in the Engineering department? because thats my prospective major.

also what is the average SAT score for stanford?

Engineering is significantly harder than any other major at Cal and several other colleges.

CS is in College of Letters and Science, but the REAL CS is in the EECS program. I think it's has the lowest acceptance rate at Cal (12%). The College of Engineering's acceptance rate averages at like 17% and the other colleges at Berkeley's average acceptance rate is like 27% or so.

His gpa and sats are not quite good enough to feel that he will obviously get into the college of engineering. Just looking at gpa and sats, 50% if he is in state. 10% if oos.

Is there really a difference from getting the cs major in the college of letters and science than from the college of engineering?

While I didn't read all 76 pages, it seems to pretty much confirm what flippy said above.

Oh, and it also seems to be trying to push greater access for blacks--which doesn't seem to be going too well if you look at that LA Times article earlier this month talking about how few blacks there are enrolling this coming year at UCLA and UC Berkeley compared to the state population of blacks.

get rid of umichigan and utaustin, berkeley and la are better and you're probably in - berkeley which ahs the highest scores of all the uc's has gpa 4.26 avg and sat ~2000 avg. just don't apply for engineering/cs

if i were you:

ucb/la/sd
cmu
usc - for scholarship money perhaps
stanford - why not, youll probably (90%) be rejected but go for it

cal/la/sd:safe match as long as not engineering
note: cal and la count more than 8 semesters...since the average acceptance is around 4.2+ for both. Average meaning people who r athletes get their gpa counted in there also...so basically your fully weighted have to be higher than 4.2 to be match since u have to account for those lower gpa athletes
